Prom Court girls selected

Prom Court elections were held last week and the following senior girls were elected. They are: Carolyn Reid, Anne England, Betsy Bryan, Margie Fuller, and Hilda Jackson. The girl who received the most votes will be announced at the prom and crowned queen. Senior Amy Poteat has earned the rank of valedictorian for 1976 with an overall average of 4.0. Amy is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Math Honor Society, Science Honor Society, and the Spanish National Honor Society. On May 19 at 8 p.m., the advanced students of keyboard and guitar labs will present a musical concert with original compositions by students. Entitled "Key-

Linda Fullerton board Capers," the concert will be held in the bandroom. Keyboard students include: Catherine Black, Yvette Brammer, Karin Havlin, Jeffery Roth, David Cohen, Vicki Perdise, Margaret Davis, Ronnie Johnson, Carrie Stadley, and Linda Robin. The music department will present its final concerts of this week called "Ultimo Concerto." On May 11 the Symphonic and Wind Ensem- ble Two bands held a successful first concert. Omega Singers and Stage Band will present a "Night of Jazz" Wednesday evening. This concert promises to be the highlight of the week. Thursday evening the orchestra and Wind Ensemble One will give its last performance. Tickets are $1 and may be bought from any band member. Tall Flag Corps tryouts are this week in the gym from 5 to 7 p.m. Any interested girl should contact Mrs. Marron of the Dance Department. Nominations for next year's German Club officers are due in May 12. Election ballots will be handed out on May 17, and officers will be announced at the banquet on May 25.

South Miami High

Lisa Tucker Silver Knight goes to editor At the annual Silver Knight awards presentation held April 29, Pam Perry, editor of the 1976 De Capello yearbook claimed the award for her outstanding achievement in journalism. Honorable Mentions also went to Stephanie Browner for general scholarship and Julie Wetzel for science. Elections for next year's class officers were held Wednesday, May 5. The results are: Senior class President, John Koski; Vice-President, Tony Gonzalez; Secretary, Lucy Sanchez; Treasurer, Patty Romano; and Historian, David Davidoff. Junior class President, Rick Rodriguez; Vice-President, Beverly Virgil; Secretary, Anne Hines; Treasurer, Mary McDivitt. Student Government; President, John Sanchez; Vice-President, Jodi Iseman; Secretary, Sue Mueller; Treasurer, Tomijean Fernandez; Historian, Sue Khoury. Tom Frank is SMSH's paddle ball tournaqent champion. Ubaldo Serra came in second place, and Mike Gordon, third. Carlos Tandron came in fifth place in the shot put event at the state track meet held in Winter Park.

Summer academic programs offered

In the South, Southwest and South Central school districts, 39 elementary schools, 12 junior schools and 10 senior high will be offering full academic programs this summer between June 17 and Aug. 18. Almost half of the school system's elementary schools and 37 junior and senior high schools will be open for full sessions this summer, with countywide enrollment anticipated to be about 85,000 students. With a few exceptions, the summer curriculum is a replica of the rest of the school year. It is a nine-week session offering full academic programs and providing school lunch and school bus service. All schools, however, including the elementaries, will operate on a five hour day. Elementary schools will have a 2 p.m. dismissal to give teachers time to participate in staff development programs. A bilingual aspect of this summer quin offerings will be the Future Studies Seminars for high school students, including Coral Gables High in the South Central area. Students attending the seminar will have the opportunity to study the future through both academic disciplines and art. The course will culminate with a Future's Festival. Seminar on Third Century, U.S.A. Within its context, Coral Gables Senior High will operate a "Colloquium in Romantic and Future Studies — 1776 to Present" for its gifted students. Some of the special programs that operate year 'round will be offered this summer including the Court Observer program and the Science Laboratory Research program approvals in the elementary schools for gifted children, including Leewood in the South area. Three alternative schools in the southern end of the county will be operating full schedules while satellite centers will be offering special education and academic programs that may not be available in the regular summer quinniester. Those schools include the COPE Center South, Youth Opportunity School South and Miami Mac Arthur Senior High School South. Elementary school students will take courses for remedial and enrichment purposes. Academic programs will center around the Reading and Mathematics Systems Program and the Early Childhood Curriculum for kindergarten through second grade levels; primary basic skills and skills children need to learn independently. In three area schools which have been piloting the total quinmester program since April 1973, students may enroll to accelerate their elementary graduation or to opt for a vacation at some other time during the school year. The pilot elementary schools in the South are Auburndale, Everglades and Palmetto. Recreation at the secondary level will be in the form of lifetime sports offered as part of the regular physical education program. Some after-school recreation programs will be offered at selected elementary schools as they are in all Community Schools. The following is a complete list of the South Central, Southwest and South district schools which will operate summer quinmester centers: South Central Area — Allapattah, Auburndale, Coconut Grove, Citrus Grove, Coral Way, Comstock, Douglas MacArthur, Ene. F. Fish, Floral Heights, Kensington Park, Kelsey Pharr, Silver Bluff and West Dunbar elementaries. Junior and senior high schools include Allapattah Jr., Shenandoah Jr., Kinlock Park Jr., Coral Gables Sr., Miami Sr. High, Miami Jackson Sr., and Robert E. Lee. South Area — Air Base, Bel-Aire, Caribbean, Colonial Drive, Florida City, Leisure City, Miami Heights, Palmetto, Pine Villa, Redland, West Homestead and Whispering Pines elementary schools. Junior-highs include Palmetto Jr., Palmetto Sr., South Dade Sr., and COPE Center South will have summer programs. Southwest Area — Blue Lakes, Coral Park Emerson, Everglades, Greenglade, Kendale Lakes, Leewood, Royal Palm, Seminole, South Miami Sunset Park, Sylvania Heights and Tropical Elementary schools. The secondary schools include Richmond Heights Jr., Rockway Jr., Glades Jr., West Miami Jr., Killian Sr., Coral Park Sr., Miami-Douglas MacArthur Senior and Youth Opportunity School South.
