Barrier-free is goal

Four local high school athletes will be participating in the Wheelchair Obstacle Course timed competition in the Dade County Courthouse, May 13 at 1 p.m. The contest is to demonstrate how architectural barriers cause real problems even for Dade's best high school athletes. Among the high school students competing are Luis Lopez, Coral Park Senior High; Bob Karpiak and Jeff Solman, Coral Gables Senior High; George Koakley and Mike Stage, Killian Senior High; and Paul Robinson and Jeff Walker, Palmetto Senior High. The county commission has passed legislation which insures that all new construction will be more accessible, and on May 14, the Symposium on Freedom of Access will be held for Dade's builders, architects and building inspectors to help them understand how to design facilities that are barrier-free. The events are just one of several planned by the County Mayor's Advisory Board on the Physically Disabled this week.

Project given deadline

From Page 1 vice, has filed a $58,000 lien against the mortgage on the unfinished condominium to cover back rent owed him on the idle crane. Darnell, an airline pilot, was unmoved by negotiations that saw the hearing on the 911 Ponce property begin at 10 a.m. only to be reset for 2 p.m. when Brickman said things could be worked out in an hour. At 2 p.m., though all parties reported progress, the matter was still unresolved and the extra four hours was reluctantly changed by commissioners to an extra, final two weeks.
