He's next in line for CG Chamber president
As a member of 12 different patriotic and service organizations, Robert Harcourt rarely has much free time. Yet, he is a member of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce in addition to all his other activities. "Being a businessman, I feel the Chamber is the best organization in which to promote the activities of the city and its future," Harcourt said. "Every good citizen should consider becoming involved in its work". Harcourt became involved about 10 years ago when he moved to Coral Gables from New York. He came to the city and "liked it so much," he didn't want to go back. He became vice president in charge of public relations and marketing at the Florida National Bank at Coral Gables. Harcourt also joined the Chamber then. He has served on various committees and is a past treasurer. Today he is president-elect. "I suppose next year I'll be president," he said, "following Margaret St. Germain, who's doing an excellent job." He said the Chamber has grown rapidly over the years and now has well over 1,000 people involved. As captain of one of the membership committees, he said the Chamber is hoping to add at least 200 members this year. "We're inviting all people in Coral Gables who would like to be involved in the future of this city," Harcourt said. "We hold the responsibilities for keeping Coral Gables beautiful." Although Harcourt said the committees of the Chamber are too numerous to mention, he named the "Keep the City Beautiful," parking, and the Retail Merchants committees as important factors in making the city "appealing and attractive." He said the transit committee is also important because it is working to allow better access to Coral Gables, despite the Blue Dash which closes up the South Dixie Highway lane where motorists can turn off to Coral Gables. Harcourt is proud of the Chamber as both a business and social organization. He is also a member of the Kiwanis Club of Coral Gables, the Eank Marketing Association, the Miracle Mile Association, the Sons of the American Revolution, and the Ponce de Leon Development Association. Harcourt is a retired captain in the New York National Guard, where he served for 25 years, a member of the Squadron "A" Ex-Members Association, and the Squadron "C" Cavalry Club in New York. He is also a member of the Boosters Club of Coral Gables Senior High School, the Coral Gables Country Club and St. Phillips Episcopal Church. Harcourt has also recently been named director of the South West Y.M.C.A. . Bob Harcourt . . . president-elect
