New ramps planned for turnpike

The Florida Department of Transportation spent one day last week taking a survey at four South Dade locations on the Florida Turnpike to determine where toll plazas. should be added to help pay the cost of additional ramps to be constructed on the South side of Kendall Drive and the Homestead Extension intersections. The toll revenues study, under the direction of Sam Draper, DOT bond development director, was under taken to determine where and what type of toll booths — either the ramp kind of the barrier style with attendants — would be added to the turnpike. According to Draper, ramps on the south side of Kendall Drive and the Homestead Extension have been designed and bids are now being taken for the projects. "We didn't know where toll booths should be located, but instead of holding up the project, we went ahead with the design and construction." he said. "By the time the results of the survey are available in September we will already have begun construction," he added. The DOT wants the new ramps to pay for themselves within 10 years. That is one of the reasons why they held the toll revenue survey to determine what locations would help achieve that goal. Draper said that the additional toll booths will probably mean a reduction in the toll at the Bird Road barrier which now costs 30 cents. In other words, people traveling through two toll gates would end up paying the same amount they do now when they drive through the one on Bird. Among the questions asked travelers on the South Dade turnpike Friday included the origin and destination of their trip, the type of vehicle, and the frequency and purpose of the trips. "The area developed quicker that we had contemplated and in order to fulfill the needs of the residents of that immediate area the ramps are being constructed," Draper said. The results of the survey. should be available in four months. In the meantime, construction of the ramps should begin soon, with completion of the project scheduled for December or January.
