CHIdirector says firing was unfair

George Rice, who was fired last week as executive director of Community Health Incorporated. (CHI), says that action was unfair because he never saw a committee report of allegations against him. Rice was suspended with pay until January 17 by CHI's board of directors. He has been under staff fire for many months for a variety of complaints. CHI, located at 10300 SW 216th St., is a government funded health center that provides low cost medical care for indigents as well as other area residents. At CHI's board meeting last week, a committee presented a report of its three-month study of internal problems. Although the report was discussed at length, neither Rice nor the other board members had an opportunity to study the report before a vote carried to fire Rice, says board president James Lee. Among the report's documented findings were: loss of patient confidence in the quality of health care provided by the CHI; lack of input from physicians into administrative decisions; lack of written personnel policies and procedures; inadequate fiscal accountability; and racism and favoritism in the handling of promotions and salaries. Jack Campbell, chairman of the investigating committee said the report concluded that the CHI directorship needed a man with exceptional abilities, and that the board should decide if Rice was that man. "Rice has done a lot for CHI, but this has degenerated into a dog fight," Campbell remarked. He stressed that the committee did not recommend Rice's firing. "But I never knew the details of the charges against me," Rice emphasized. "That doesn't mean I don't think they have the right to fire me, but I don't think they were fair," he added.
