Public employes aren't allowed to accept gifts
By KAY SEVERINSEN Staff Writer If your name is Scrooge, read no further. This is for those people so full of boundless holiday spirit, that they give gifts to everyone in sight. But mainly it is for those people who want to give gifts of appreciation to public employes for their services. Officially, Dade County policemen are not allowed to receive gifts from anyone they serve unless, of course, that person is already a friend or relative. "Our director's policy is that gifts are gratuities," said Metro Public Information Officer Jim Baab. "If an officer accepts a gift, he might later feel obligated to do something for that person that is not quite right. "But nine persons out of 10 give gifts just out of the goodness of their hearts, to show appreciation," Baab added. For postmen, the story is about the same. "Our position is that significant gifts are not acceptable," says Miami Postmaster Herbert Daws. The same goes for firemen. "Sometimes people who have been rescued want to show their appreciation," said a spokesman for Metro Fire Chief M.Q. Bullock. "But the county policy does not allow firemen to receive personal gifts. "People who want to make a contribution, should do so to the Dade County Fireman's Benevolent Association."
She planned kids' lunch by herself
From page 1 money from friends and relatives last September and was able to raise more than $300. An honor math student and president of her senior class, Emma just wanted to do something for those who are not as fortunate as she is. "I just wanted to help people who haven't had as many opportunities as I have had," she said. "Most of these children are poor and their parents are out working and can't take care of them." After collecting the money from friends, Emma went shopping around for the food.
