'Spin Me a Daydream' is theme for this year's Jr. OB Parade

By CLAIRE OSTALDA Staff Writer Remember what it was like when you were a kid? Remember the Good Ship Lollipop and playing Cowboys and Indians "almost for real?" Childhood dreams will all come to life in the annual Junior Orange Bowl Parade, Wednesday, December 29, as floats, carrying out the theme "Spin Me A Daydream," wind through the streets of Coral Gables starting at 1:30 p.m. "The floats are all based on alleged childhood fantasies," said Ken Smith, public relations man for Junior Orange Bowl activities. Float entries by local businesses and community service organizations include "My Flower Garden Comes to Life," "My Flying Machine," "Cowboys and Indians," "A Treasure Hunt," and "Good Ship Lollipop." The Coral Gables Youth Center is putting last-minute finishing touches on their float, called "My Fair Dolly," and the Boy Scouts in Troop 7 in Coral Gables are entering a float with a flag theme. The troop will also march in the parade carrying historic United States flags. "Fly Me to the Moon" is the 4H Clubs of Dade County entry. Bands from Coral Gables, Southridge and South Dade Senior High Schools will also march in the parade, and the Ukrainian dancers in native dress will perform, among other groups. But what happen' if it rains? "It just doesn't," said Smith. "Once, several years ago, it was raining and the mayor of Coral Gables hopped in a police car and drove through the parade route saying the parade was cancelled. But as he was announcing it was cancelled, the rain stopped and Jim Barney, director of the parade, started the parade and followed right behind him. So the Junior Orange Bowl Parade has never been cancelled." The parade will begin on Ponce de Leon Boulevard at Alhambra Circle, move south to Miracle Mile, turn west to the City Hall then along Biltmore Way to Segovia. Bleachers will be located at City Hall on Biltmore Way. Tickets priced at $3, for bleacher seats, are still available, at the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, 50 Aragon, and at Jephson's Pharmacy, 2347 Ponce de Leon Blvd.
