"There is a fierce com-petitive spirit when we play Scrabble," said Ms. Jones. "When it is just two people playing, the game is really a chal-lenge." At the tournament, partners are matched up after the first game ac-cording to their scores. "That way, you get a partner who is challeng-ing," Ms. Jones said. "In many ways the game is similar to chess because in addition to knowledge of words, you have to have a special vis-ual perception to lay out a field and mount a strate-gy," she said. "It is great to learn a half of dozen new words every time you play, and fun to observe the unusu-al strategies mounted by your opponents."
