Golf stars begin teeing off Monday in junior OB match
The world's top junior golfers begin teeing off at 8 a.m. Monday, Dec. 27, in the 13th Annual Orange Bowl International Junior Championship. The entry field of 106 golfers in the 72-hole tournament represents a cross section of 31 U.S. states and 16 foreign nations. Virtually all the contestants hold state or national junior championships. Last year's winner, Bill May, of Miami, is now 18, over the age limit and thus unable to defend his crown. Returning, however, for his last crack at repeating is the 1974 winner, David Abell, of Fort Pierce, Fla., who is now 17. Others expected to be contenders in the invitational tournament which continues through Thursday, Dec. 30, are South Africa's Gary Brown, the junior Transvaal champion; Lawrence Field, of Oklahoma City, the U.S. PGA junior champion; Madden Hatcher, III, of Columbus, Ga., the USGA junior champion; and Thierry Planchin, of Vichy, the reigning French amateur champion. Largest foreign delegation is the five-member South African group, which includes Brown and the son of Tournament Advisor Gary Player, Wayne Player, of Johannesburg. Four of the South Africans will be playing four U.S. contestants in a special 18-hole challenge match at Biltmore Friday, Dec. 31. Winner of the tournament for male amateur golfers under the age of 18 will receive the Gary Player Trophy, according to Tournament Chairman Tony Mantinan. The admission-free event at the tricky, par-71 Biltmore is sponsored by the Orange Bowl Committee, in cooperation with the Junior Orange Bowl Committee and the City of Coral Gables.

New footballs
Five NCAA footballs and community service were the focal points of a presentation by Gallagher-Cole Associates and K-Land. The footballs were presented to K-land by Samuel T. Cole (far right) and Raymond O. Boon (far left), partners in the firm. The boys in the middle are Paul DiMare (no. 31) and Scott Ellis. The insurance agency was awarded the footballs as a result of its winning entry in a community service contest.
