Dear Decorator: I'm upset. I have a beautiful old table that has been in my family for more than 100 years. Since my son has taken his own apartment, I would like to give him this lovely piece, but he says "No, thanks," because he wants only modern furniture. Besides its intrinsic value, nothing adds more character and warmth to a contemporary scheme than something wonderfully old. Tell sonny to treasure your gift, and that "old with new" is "in" Dear Decorator: I have a small, narrow living room, about 10 by 13, with a sliding glass door to the terrace on one end and a dining area on the other. We want to make the room look wider with mirrors. How do you suggest we do this? Mrs. Larry Levin Kendall Dear Stretch: Mirrors can effectively create the illusion of space, as do several other treatments. Since you specify mirrors, let's stick with them. Remember, the primary function of mirrors is to reflect an image. I've seen too many mirrored walls that, reflect a bare, uninteresting area of nothing. Since you have a terrace, why not pretty that up with lots of plants, baskets and pots, and mirror the opposite wall. Now you have a lovely view repeated. If you have some space at the sides of your terrace wall, put up a strip of mirror there, too, and join it with another strip to create a mirrored corner.
