UP, UP, UP go the hopes of the congregation at the First Methodist Church of South Miami. With almost half of the required $250,000 already promised in subscriptions, they believe construction on their new sanctuary will get underway within the year. Campaign workers have so far obtained $110,000 in promised donations.
Lack Of Room Keeps Them Away A 1948 Dream of Sanctuary To Come True for Church
By RAYMOND LANG Times Staffer If it were possible for a church to be a baseball player, the First Methodist Church of South Miami would be walloping the ball at a torrid .440 pace. A church, however, is an organization of members. And in this case, they have raised 44 per cent of the $250,000 needed for a sanctuary. General chairman Warren Smyth announced at a "Day of Destiny" banquet Friday night that workers have gotten subscriptions totaling $110,000. Campaign workers will be collecting the remainder in subscriptions — covering 150 weeks — starting June 1. Construction of the sanctuary is expected within the year. The Rev. Ralph B. Huston pointed out recently the need for a sanctuary at his church on Red Road and Ponce de Leon Boulevard. "In four years, our congregation has increased from 1,127 to 1,659. Our present congregation room seats 300 persons. "We double our sermons and still feel the pressure." How do congregations members attend church if there is no room for them? "They don't!" said Rev. Huston. "With what we have, we discourage them." Planning a sanctuary is a step-by-step procedure. "Even when we moved here in 1948, a sanctuary was conceived in the master plan," said the minister. "We're just completing what was conceived then. "A year ago, a building committee was started, and from that start, a total master plan was conceived. "And then the question was which of the units should be built first, the sanctuary or the Sunday school." Rev. Huston said the congregation decided two months ago the sanctuary should come first after weighing several factors. "First of all," said Rev. Huston, "the present chapel was built to accommodate one-fourth of our present membership. "Second, we recognized that it is the people who come to the church that are the ones who pay for the buildings — not the children in Sunday school. Ed Harris is building committee chairman. Members are R. Fain Howell, George Gibbons, Stanley Dodd, Dr. H. Winter Griffith. John Weatherford, Warren Smyth, The Rev. Huston and Mrs. Richard Lane. William Arthur is architectural consultant. Just how important is a church's building committee? It took no time for Rev. Huston to answer. "They're it."
