IS THIS A GIANT striding across a canyon? Not quite. It's a workman stepping across a six-inch deep trench. Workmen at Alhambra Circle and Granada Boulevard have removed the circular, cement, lane-dividers and are replacing them with a parkway. The cement foundation for the parkway is poured into the trenches.

In the Nick of Time UM'er and Police Help Student to Fly

A University of Miami student who lost his plane ticket April 24 made the flight in time thanks to the combined efforts of another student, the manager of the Miracle Theater and the Coral Gables police. Edward J. Powers, of 1235 Walsh B., went to the police when he discovered he'd lost the tickets for an early morning flight to Philadelphia. When Powers suspected he lost the ticket at the Miracle Theater, Sgt. Robert J. Becherich, called manager Franklin Maury at home. Maury said that the ticket had been found by usher Tom Zelenak, also a UM student, and turned over to him. The manager rushed to the airport at 2 a.m. with the ticket — reuniting it with Powers just an hour before his plane was scheduled to leave.

CG Sea Scouts Win Awards

Tenth annual banquet of Sea Scout Ship 537, sponsored by Coral Gables Elks Lodge 1676, was held Tuesday night at Park Lane's Coral Way cafeteria. About 250 attended the dinner, where awards were presented for outstanding Scouting activity. Guest speakers included Coral Gables Vice Mayor Joe Murphy, Miami City Commissioner Henry Balaban, Metro Commissioner Ben McGahey and the Rev. Ladislau Biro. The Ship has a 65-foot ship for use in training. Receiving awards posthumously were two former members who died by drowning in two pool mishaps, in the past several months. They are Michael Speith, "Best all-around Sea Scout," who lost his life in Venetian Pool last year, and Leslie Grossinger drowned accidentally in a Miami Beach swimming pool. Robin Pyne, of 326 Minores Ave., and John Self, of 7065 SW 19th St., virtually ran away with all the "Superlative" awards.
