Installations Mark PTA Meetings

By EUNICE TALL Correspondent Phone MO 1-2294 Installations of PTA officers for next year take place in various schools this month. PONCE DE LEON JUNIOR HIGH Mrs. Lawson A. Cheatham has been elected president of the Ponce de Leon Junior High School PTA for next year. Other officers serving with Mrs. Cheatham are Mrs. Herbert J. Mills, first vice president; Mrs. Scott Braznell, second vice president; Mrs. William M. Copp, third vice president; Mrs. William Petherst, recording secretary; Mrs. Robert Knoll, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Sam Silver, treasurer; and Mrs. William Queensberry Jr., historian. Highlights of the year will be presented at the regular PTA meeting of Ponce de Leon Junior High School which will be May 16 in the school auditorium at 8 p.m. New PTA officers will be installed at this time. A fashion show, modeling garments made by students in the home economics department, will be given. The last Ponce de Leon PTA board meeting of the year will be held May 8 at 10 a.m. at the home of Mrs. Wayne Withers, 1104 Hardee Rd. It will be a luncheon meeting honoring out-going PTA president, Mrs. John Lipscomb. CORAL GABLES ELEMENTARY Installation services for new PTA officers of Coral Gables Elementary School will be May 9 at 3:15 p.m. in the school auditorium. Officers will be lead by Mrs. Frank Nowak, in-coming president. Other officers are Mrs. W. D. Reynolds, first vice president; Mrs. Robert K. Andre, second vice president; Mrs. W. M. Copp, third vice president; Mrs. Charles L. Craig, recording secretary; Mrs. Joe Coppedge, corresponding secretary; and Mrs. Hugh A. Page, Jr., treasurer. Music will be provided by the school choir. SUNSET ELEMENTARY The next PTA meeting of Sunset Elementary School will be May 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the school cafetorium. The main highlight of the evening will be the installation of new PTA officers. They are Mrs. F. Alsobrook, president; Mrs. Norman Alley, first vice president; Mrs. Jerald L. Rosen, second vice president; Mrs. Hugh Reep, treasurer; Mrs. George H. Sweet, recording secretary; and Mrs. John Hoehl, corresponding secretary. MERRICK DEMONSTRATION ELEMENTARY Installation of PTA officers for Merrick Demonstration Elementary School will be held May 8 at 8 p.m. in the school cafetorium. Officers are Mrs. Willard Brown, president; Mrs. Pat Murphy, first vice president; Mr. W. K. Leu, second vice president; Mrs. Thomas Armour, recording secretary; and Mr. David Pettigrew, treasurer. Mrs. Ted Malakoff, area seven co-ordinator for PTA, will install the officers. The school band will perform during the meeting under the direction of Mrs. Maxine Wechsler, music teacher. PINECREST ELEMENTARY The next regular PTA meeting for Pinecrest Elementary School will be May 10 at 8 p.m. in the school cafetorium. Mr. Clark Bell, music teacher, will present a string ensemble. New officers for next year will be elected. MRS. CHEATHAM

Newsie Is Held Up

A newspaper distributor was robbed of $45 in a holdup early the morning of April 27 at 1575 Sunset Road. Eugene Tynes, of Hollywood, told Coral Gables police that the robbery occurred shortly before 7 p.m. as he was unloading newspapers from a truck owned by Dade County News Dealers Supply Co. The thief entered the truck, pulled out a nickle-platted hand gun and told Tynes: "Give me your money if you want to live." Tynes said he handed over the money and the bandit took off. According to Officer Walter Stathers, Tynes described the robber as about 50 years old and slightly built.

Opens Next Week Get Ready for Mirth In Methodist Minstrel

The 9th Annual Wesley Minstrel & Variety Show will be presented for three nights next week, May 11, 12 and 13 at the Coconut Grove Playhouse. Dr. Lewis N. Head will be interlocutor. Family Fete

Observation of National Christian Family week will begin Sunday at Riviera Presbyterian Church. The sermon topic will be "A Successful Marriage." On Monday, a father-son banquet will be held.

Gableite S. L. Stewart III Given Wilson Fellowship

DURHAM, N. C. - Seldon L. Stewart III of Coral Gables is one of 19 students at Duke University awarded Woodrow Wilson Fellowships. The fellowship will cover the first year of graduate study and is designed to encourage the fellow to consider college teaching as a possible career. Nominations for the fellowships are made by faculty members. Stewart, son of Mr. and Mrs. Seldon L. Stewart of 424 Almeria Ave., is majoring in mathematics. He has achieved dean's list for the past four consecutive semesters.

Sunset School Work to Begin

Carl Swanson, Miami contractor, has been awarded the $11,452 contract for a new library, a book room and a classroom for Sunset Elementary School, 5120 Sunset Dr. Swanson was the lowest of four bidders for the job which is expected to begin this week and be complete by the beginning of school in the fall.
