Want to Fence? Write? Come On

If you like your sports indoors,— If your recreation leans on the hobby side— Then the Coral Gables War Memorial Youth Center probably is the place for you. The adult program includes a diversified list of activities such as judo, ballroom dancing, ceramics, Spanish, tropical crafts, clothing selection, fencing, creative writing, bridge lessons, piano, art workshop and chess, to name a few. Located at 400 Anastasia, near the intersections of University Drive and Le Jeune Road, the Youth Center represents a half-million dollar investment. Jeannette Hunt, the director, has arranged an activities schedule to suit young and old. The modern center, which is the focus of recreational activity for many persons, is open for adults Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Children's programs are scheduled from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Friday. It's 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. Children under 14 are discouraged from using the center in the evening. The center is also open all day during public school holidays, except Christmas, New Year's, July 4, Labor Day and Thanksgiving. Some activities at the Youth Center require a fee. Some are based on membership and others are on a lesson basis. Full information about all the activities carried on at the Youth Center and the fees may be obtained at the center. A 19-page outline of activities is available and information may also be obtained by calling Mrs. Hunt at HI 6-0881. THE YOUTH CENTER

On Aragon Avenue Children's Theatre Coming Here

A children's repertory theater is coming to Coral Gables. The "Merry-Go-Round" Playhouse, at 110 Aragon Ave., will open a summer workshop for youngsters age 6-15, July 15 and begin its presentation of children's plays Sept. 22 with "Cinderella." Ivan Kivitt, 22, who is starting the theater and will direct, was 10-years-old when he appeared in his first play. It was "Cinderella." As workmen hammered and nailed, Kivitt paused recently to talk about his theater. He said it will be the only theater in the state to concentrate exclusively on children's plays. Kivitt will be assisted by Jean Krasner, author of children's books. He said some of her works will be adapted to the stage. The summer workshop will run from July 15 to Sept. 8. Kivitt said the workshop students, who will be in ages 6-10 and 10-15, will learn varied facets of the theater, such as acting, makeup, voice and scenery. After the opening of "Cinderella," Kivitt will follow with "The Emperor's Clothes" on Oct. 7. All plays will be presented on weekends. The theater will seat 200 persons, Kivitt said.
