by helen reynolds society editor Have you ever attended a "Tasting Bee?" It's not like a sewing bee, we can assure you, and is much more alluring. A tasting bee is composed of the very latest and finest send-offs in the cooking world, and the tasters are people, mostly women, God bless'em, who are always on the look-out for new recipes, especially tried and true ones. Thursday, we attended a tasting bee at Sewannee Hall, St. Philip's Episcopal Church, as the guest of Emily (Mrs. Herbert) Vance. It was the second annual tasting bee of St. Hilda's and St. Catherine's Chapters of the Woman's Auxiliary. The long, beautifully-equipped hall had tables seating four and or eight. There were 160 tasters attending. Guests at Mrs. Vance's tables included Mrs. Hugh Purvis, her neighbor on Santa Maria Street, and Miss Irene Vance, her sister-in-law of St. Louis, Mo., her house guest. Customers at a tasting bee form in line as their table is called (by number) over the loud speaker. Each kind of food, from appetizers to dessert, is served in tiny paper cups - a taste; coffee is served at the table. MRS. VANCE There were 27 varieties to choose from and by the time you filled a large dinner plate, you had misgivings that you could eat all. But you did. Emily's "clam dip," was a ringer, a combination of cream cheese, garlic lemon juice, clam juice all mixed together, served with potato chips or crackers. Kip (Mrs. Royce) Powell who recently made The Times editorial page in the "25 years ago" happenings column, as a reigning beauty queen, contributed a recipe for Tennessee Corn Bread. It was luscious. We said hello to many long time friends, like Mrs. Allison B. Curry of Hardee Road and Mrs. James Ammen, Mrs. William Cashbaugh, Mrs. James D. Shields and Mrs. William B. Weaver. Mr. and Mrs. John T. Watters, 3001 Segovia St. have recently returned from an extended automobile trip. They spent a "white" Easter in Akron, Ohio, arriving there in a blizzard. They visited their daughter, Suzanne and family, Dr. and Mrs. G. W. Quinn, and granddaughters, Karen and Patti Jane. Mr. Watters said he had to shovel snow off the top of his automobile every morning. It's the Provisional luncheon presented to the members of the Junior League Tuesday, May 16 and Miss Almalee Cartee of Coral Gables will represent the new provisionals. It's an annual luncheon to be held at the Bath Club and the highlight is the skit the provisionals present, based on their indoctrination course. Mrs. Leon Mims, 4500 Anderson Rd. and Mrs. E. N. Noylan, 521 San Servando Ave., are luncheon chairmen. Almalee is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Horace L. Cartee, 6619 Granada Blvd. At the Coral Gables Country Club it will be the annual "Darby" day, dinner and dancing or should we say racing, Saturday night. Racing, because there will be members and their guests participation in the field. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Mlgon, 625 San Servando Ave., are chairmen. Assisting will be Dr. and Mrs. Richard Sena, 6201 Riviera Dr., who know more about horses than most any one hereabout. They have their own stable and corral.
EARLY GABLES DAYS She Licked Stamps for $5 A Day; Now She's President
By HELEN REYNOLDS Times Staffer Mrs. Kathryn Murphy has been in the real estate business since the 1925 boom days in Coral Gables. Asked what her largest sale was, she countered with her fastest sale which occured 15 years ago. A young couple came into the office at 4:45 p.m. one day. At 6 p.m. they had signed and were delivered the property. "And do you know," she said, "they still reside there." Names? "Oh, I couldn't tell you that!" Today, Mrs. Murphy is president of Leslie H. Coombes Inc. It was in 1925, that energetic Kathryn went looking for a job. Naturally, she applied at the busiest place in town, the Coral Gables Corporation, then on Ponce de Leon Boulevard, at Aragon Ave. She was interviewed by Mr. Coombes, the president of the corporation. He said he would hire her on a temporary basis, but that she had to be most careful. And do you know, they still kid me about that around here," she said. Her first job was addressing envelopes and it paid $5 a day. There were 500 employes milling about that old building, today there are three. She was associated with the late Mr. Coombes in the business for 34 years. We interviewed Kathryn in her pine paneled office. It was in the directors' room and we sat opposite each other at a long table. On the wall was a large framed and glassed enlargement of a picture taken during the opening festivities of the Venetian Pools. It was a fashion show and hundreds of spectators sat in the bleacher-type seats to watch the passing parade of the 1925 fashions. The prime crowd getter was William Jennings Bryan who lectured daily, his voice booming across the water. Kathryn told us the records of the original Coral Gables Corporation are stored in vaults. The Murphys have two sons, Pat and Jack, and four grandchildren including their first grandson, Jimmy, four months old. The night before the interview, Kathryn was inducted into office as the president of the Coral Gables Quota Club, women-in-business service club. Sunday, Kathryn and Carol Ringer, a past president of Quota, were to don blue jeans to paint their service club's new building, the former Bill Peek dance studios. MRS. MURPHY

CITY NATIONAL CONTINUES PHENOMENAL GROWTH
In slightly over four and a half years, the City National Bank of Coral Gables has grown to be a $15.000.000 financial institution. The following deposit comparisons show the tremendous growth since it opened its doors in September, 1956: 12-31-56 | $ 2.555.258.95 | 12-31-57 | 6.049.972.14 | 12-31-58 | 8.584.375.54 | 12-31-59 | 9.217.462.37 | 12-31-60 | 11.609.391.16 | 4-12-61 | 14.305.763.35 The bank was moved about a year ago to 2701 Le Jeune Road, where a new, modern building was constructed. An increasing number of people from Coral Gables and the Southwest section are availing themselves of the services of the Trust Department. Adv.
