SCHOOL ART TEACHER 'Fangers' to 'Gators, Dorothea's at Home

By HELEN REYNOLDS Times Staffer We first met Dorothea Dubler, of 427 Navarre, through her "Fangers," a coathanger made fancy. Dorothea teaches the third grade children at Seminole Elementary School. One of the children's delights is the art hour. With Fangers all you need is a coat hanger, scissors, Manila paper, color construction paper and glue. Result—a fan. From this mild lesson, Dorothea jumped to a life-size ostrich, which the children named Oliver. And from Oliver it was to a full-grown alligator, 111⁄2 feet in length. Material for both bird and beast is papier mache. Wooden pickle forks sawed off and set in glue were teeth for the gator and when the alligator (he hasn't been named yet) was finished he took a ride to Miami Beach. Dorothea wanted the members of the National Art Association in session at Deauville to see the alligator. She strapped the gator to the top of her Plymouth Coupe, and on the way over, on Biscayne Boulevard, a traffic cop passed her going the opposite direction. When he spotted the car and the gator, which was swaying back and forth, he slowed up, turned around and followed her. However, Dorothea was right; if she could fool the cop, the art teachers could be fooled. The dedicated alligator was put in the lobby of the Deauville, and as far as we know he is still there. The children at the school could vote for possession of Oliver. But no one cared about the alligator. Miss Dubler taught for private kindergardens for four years before joining the Dade County School System. She is a graduate of the University of Miami where she majored in education and her minor was art. She plans to return to her alma mater for the summer session and towards her master's in art.
