She Swam Through College, Makes Big Splash at Home

(See related story, page 11) By BECKY DOYLE QUINN Times Reporter Twenty-two year old Rosemary Lee, a Gableite, is "rather water-logged." Rosemary, a vivacious brunette, is aquatic director for the Southwest branch of the YMCA. Rosemary has been teaching swimming with the Y for the last six years. But this is the first year she's had the "paperwork" to do. She literally swam her way through college. The money she earned teaching swimming "greatly defrayed my college expenses." This summer she's been up to her neck in the work involved in arranging to teach over 400 children to swim in 29 different pools. The Y uses pools throughout the Southwest area. They range from Perrine to Coral Gables. Rosemary, and the other instructors figure they have traveled 7,000 miles in the last 10 weeks to and from the different pools. "I know it seems like an awful lot, but when you consider the location of the pools and the number of times we drive to them, it's quite a distance." Rosemary lives with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kenyon M. Lee, and sister, Libby, 17, at 225 Alesio Ave. Libby started to teach swimming this summer at the Y. Do Mr. and Mrs. Lee share the girls' enthusiasm for swimming? "They like to get wet, to get cooled off when it's hot. They go over to Venetian Pool whenever they can, but that's about it," says Rosemary. She is a graduate of Coral Gables High School, class of '56. Then she went to Maryville College, in Maryville, Tenn., and graduated June of 1960. She was a member of Theta Epsilon sorority. Her major was education. She decided she wanted to teach after working with swimming classes. Now, during the winter, she teaches second grade at Everglades Elementary. She is also active in a church group, The Kirk Keys, at the First Presbyterian Church of Miami. Rosemary's interests are varied. At school she wrote musical comedies. "At a small school you have more opportunity to dabble, and every year we had a musical show. I became very interested in them." At Maryville she took a course in water-ballet. Now she likes that very much too. She is a member of the American Association of University Women and is currently serving the Miami branch as publicity chairman. Another important interest in Rosemary's life is a certain young man who lives in Miami. He works out of town and they correspond by tape-recorder. They may "take a trip to the altar" next summer. Rosemary's busy schedule will keep her occupied until then. The climax of her main interest, the YMCA Swimming Program will come at their water carnival.
