THE NEWLY-organized Hialeah Liberal Jewish Congregation found itself without a Torah, a necessity for the Jewish High Holy Days just ended. Temple Judea of the Gables came to the rescue. Left to right are Rabbi Mordecai Podet and President Ben Essen of Temple Judea and President Marvin Leibowitz of the Hialeah temple. The Torah is a handwritten parchment scroll containing the five books of Moses in Hebrew. Jewish ritual requires that Bible reading during divine services be from such a scroll and not a printed Bible.

Car Rams Tree, Attorney Killed

A one-armed Southwest section attorney was killed and his 22-year-old companion severely injured early Saturday morning at 645 Alhambra Circle when their speeding sports car smashed into a tree. John P. Grogan, 40, of 3031 SW 27th Ave., died shortly after the accident. Mary Lorraine Houlanan, of 1042 SW 63rd Ave., who suffered a severe head laceration, is reported in "fair" condition at Doctors' Hospital. The fatality was Coral Gables' second this year.

Undug Canal Hearing Set For Sept. 26

Gables City Commissioners have a date with a group of property owners Sept. 26 to find out if they want an undug canal dug. The would-be canal would run east and west between the Coral Gables Waterway on parallel Avenue Parma. If the property owners abutting the undug canal decide they do not want the canal dug, the Commission will have to decide whether to sell or give the property away, and if sold, for how much. Similar canals have been constructed free of costs in the past when contractors agreed to do the job for the fill materials involved, according to City Attorney Ted Semple.

Library Greets Fall With Many New Titles

The Coral Gables Public Library has added over 100 new nonfiction books to its collection this month. They cover all fields of knowledge from "The Music of the Spheres," by Guy Murchie, a study of space, through the practical everyday realms in "How to Keep House," by Mary Gillies. The most beautiful book, says Catalog Librarian Harriet Dare, is I. T. Sanderson's "The Continent We Live On." It is the story of the American continent, its natural wonders and how they came to be. "The grandeur and loveliness of some of its least-known regions are told in vivid narrative," says the librarian. "The illustrations, breath-taking in their beauty, are by such famous photographers as Eisenstaedt, Weston, Elisofon and others." Among the non-fiction titles added this month by the Coral Gables Public Library are: "How to Retire Without Money," by Bob Belmont, "The Emerging Nations," by M. F. Millikan, "Social and Economic Frontiers in Latin America," by Harry Stark. "An Evil Tree, the Story of Communism," by Agnes Murphy, "You and Your Doctor," by W. H. Potter, "Gourmet Cookery for a Low-Fat Diet," by Elise Cavanna, "Caribbean Seashells," by G. L. Warmke. "How Does it work?" by R. M. Koff, "Walt Whitman's Civil War." "I am! Says the Lamb," by Theodore Roethke, "Jamaica Gallery," by Philip Kappel. "The Virgins: Magic Islands," by Jeanne Harman. "The Southerner as American," by C. G. Sellers, "Golden Wall and Mirador," by Sacheverell Sitwell. "Puerto Rican Politics and the New Deal," by T. G. Mathews, "The Making of the President 1960," by T. H. White, "Lizzie Borden," by Edward Radin, and "Merry Monarch," by Hesketh Pearson.
