469,032 SAFE MILES
BUS DRIVERS OF THE City's system spell out a 469,032-mile safe driving record during the first six months of 1961. The occasion was a safety meeting at which 27 of 32 full-time drivers received $25 Savings Bonds for six months' driving without a preventable accident.
General Tire Gets City Fathers' Okay
General Tire finally got its new gas station at the southwest corner of Giralda Avenue and Douglas Road. The City Commission Tuesday approved on final reading an ordinance changing the zoning to permit the station and tire store. The proposal had been delayed since Aug. 22, when the Commission passed the ordinance on first reading. Area property owners, including the adjacent Elks Club, mustered strong opposition during the ensuing weeks. Commissioner Joe Murphy met with Elks Club members Monday night to present the Commission's position. No one showed up at Tuesday's meeting to protest. Some conditions set down by the Commission for approval are that a six-foot wall be erected, that no driveway be established on the Giralda Avenue side, and that it be open six days a week, excluding Sundays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Traffic accidents jumped last month, but the eight-month total still lagged the comparative period for last year. Coral Gables police reported 116 accidents for August an increase of six over August 1960. No fatalities were reported for the month, but 84 were reported injured, compared to only 30 last year. Only one person has been killed this year, while two had been killed in the first eight months of 1960. A total of 1,028 accidents have been recorded, or 74 fewer than for the same period in 1960. During the same time, 371 persons reported being injured; this is 10 less than last year.
