No Second-Rate Cooking From This First-Rate Business Gal

By RAYMOND LANG Times Reporter When you talk with Mrs. G. E. Smith, there are two things about her you can't forget. As a mother, she's raised two sons. And as a businesswoman for 20 years, she's helped her husband run the Coral Gables Communications Co. that last year sold $2 million of two-way mobile radio equipment. "Mrs. Smith," we asked, "What's it like for a woman to help run a business? What does it do to her life? What type of thoughts, of golf or budgets — run through her mind?" "It's physically exhausting and it's mentally exhausting," she said, and added quickly "But it's always a challenge. "We've talked about retirement," she said, smiling at her husband across the room, "but we haven't decided what age we'd be ready to retire." When retirement does come for the Smiths, 6500 Riviera Dr., they'll well remember 1938, when they started their company at 300 Greco Ave. And 1941, when Mrs. Smith took off her apron at home and came down to the office to "fill in" for someone. Today, she's executive vice president, secretary and treasurer. And the war years, when profits were plowed back into the company and the Smiths made the first practical Walkie Talkie that was used in the Normandy invasion. "I started out doing a number of things," recalled Mrs. Smith, a native of Columbia, S.C. "Bookkeeping and relieving people on vacation. "And I think one thing a woman learns in business is to do her household chores a little more efficiently. Though the Smiths worked 12 hours a day when they started their company and now work 10 hours a day "and Saturday and Sunday, if need be," she makes sure she has time to prepare a delicious dinner for her husband. "I don't like this preparing meals from the freezer," she said. "They don't intrigue me. I find you can prepare a good meal in a short time, including vegetables. Mrs. Smith said she has "no room for hobbies" because the business consumes most of her time, though once she did enjoy playing bridge and doing church work. "I find when I'm talking to women in a group —not single — I'm there physically, but I'm here mentally with the copany. I'm sitting there, but my mind is working. 'How about it, Mr. Smith, What's it like to have your wife in the company?' we asked. "Couldn't do without her," he said tersely. "Oh hear, don't say things like that," she blushed. MRS. ADV. ATTENTION! ORCHID GROWERS

Orchids should not be left outside during a hurricane. Take them into the garage, workshop or some other sheltered place. If this is not possible, lay them on their side and cover them with wire such as screen, chicken wire or fish net. Fasten covering solidly to the ground. If you live near salt water ond must leave your orchids outside, rinse them off as soon as possible after the storm and then allow them to dry for a few days, also rinse covering or shade trees. This applies even if you live as far as 10 miles from the Bay. Brant Orchid Supply will repot them for you if needed and we also keep Orchid supplies at all times. 2970 S.W. 27th Ave. Ph. HI 3-5544
