Dale Lewis Gets a Boot From Coaching Winning Soccer Team

Coach Dale Lewis of the University of Miami talked to Gables Rotarians Friday of last week about a new athletic activity at UM-soccer. Somewhat to his surprise, the coach indicated, his newly-formed team finished its first season as the best squad in the Southern Florida league. While scoring 22 goals of their own in an undefeated season, the UM soccer team held its opposition to only four goals. Lewis, who is also the University's tennis coach, had never coached soccer before, he told the Rotarians. He said the perfect season is due to the ability of his boys and not his talents as a coach. "We don't have a single scholarship available. Everybody's there on his own. "We've got sort of a little United Nations with boys from Greece, South Africa and many Latin American countries. "Because of the heavy concentration of Latins, the U.S. State Department is showing interest in a tour for next year against some of the Latin teams." Lewis hopes to get into broader soccer competition-regional and national-in this country through the NCAA with an at-large berth in next year's tourney-"that is, if we have the kind of season we hope to." He said that of his 22 regulars, 19 will be back. Soccer is a game played by kicking a ball or batting it with the body. The hands cannot be used. The object is to traverse a field about the size of a football field and boot the ball into the opponent's goal net, thereby scoring. There are no time outs and the quarters last 22 minutes. "It takes a tough boy," Coach Lewis noted. COACH LEWIS ...at first, success

New Closing For Liquor?

This may be the last year retail liquor dealers have extra hours to sell spirits before Christmas and New Year's. The City Commission Tuesday agreed to let the extra hours policy adopted in 1954 stand, but agreed to consider amending the law to require liquor stores to close on Christmas, New Year's and Thanksgiving. Liquor merchants exacted out of previous commissions the right to open an extra two hours four working days before Christmas and one working day before New Years in exchange for a pledge to remain closed on these holidays when they fall on a week day.

Underground Lines Are Out of Question--Robinson

Cost of placing power lines underground for LeJeune Road's new lighting system would have been prohibitive and installation impractical, City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. said Tuesday. Underground lines, which would have cost about 50 per cent more than the $31,000 already spent, were never considered, said Robinson. Some people have asked about that possibility. Two parallel lines have been installed on each side of the highway to power the new system. Robinson said that underground power would have been considered if middle of the road lighting would have been possible-such as on South Dixie Highway.
