Gables Girl Is Queen for Season In JOB Festivity

One hundred seven youthful aspirants to the title of Junior Orange Bowl Queen confounded the judges at the Coral Gables Youth Center last Saturday. It was tough to select a winner from the scores of youngsters who paraded and answered questions for almost three hours. But a decision was made and the crown was awarded to pretty Bonnie Burkart of Coral Gables. Bonnie is 12 years old and the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Howard H. Burkart of 1041 Andalusia Ave. She attends Ponce Junior High School. Chosen as Princesses to accompany Queen Bonnie in her reign were 13-year-old Linda Johnson of Port Charlotte and 12-year-old Adrian Walker of South Miami. Linda is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Johnson and attends Charlotte High School. Adrian's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Richard P. Walker of 11250 SW 60th Court; she is a pupil a Palmetto Junior High School. The 1961 winner was crowned by last year's Queen, Robin Lee Krug. The 1961 Junior Queen and her court set out now on a round of newspaper, radio and television interviews. They will ride the float of honor in the Junior Orange Bowl Parade in Coral Gables on Dec. 28 and rule over the Youth Ball that same evening. Other appearances will be made in the King Orange Jamboree Parade, at the Junior Orange Bowl Football Game and the Service-to-Youth Award Luncheon. Escorting the Queen and her Princesses at all these functions will be three boys selected at South Miami Junior High School on the basis of scholastic ability: Howard Zacur, Tom Blackmon and Drew Morris. The 107 finalists were selected from a total of 924 girls who competed in 24 preliminary contests conducted by county and municipal recreation departments from as far north as Fort Pierce on the East Coast.

This Man Won Argument With Barber--$55 Worth

An argument over the evenness of the sideburns cost a Gables barber $55 in Municipal Court recently. The barber, Robert Jack DeOgburn, 23, of 1305 NW 22nd St., had been charged by Samuel Kaye of 5783 SW 60th St., with punching him on the chin following the argument. Kaye charged that DeOgburn yanked a towel off from around his neck and punched him after a haircut at University Barber Shop, 5805 Ponce de Leon Blvd. DeOgburn, who has filed an appeal, denied punching Kaye and that he only held out his arm when it appeared to him that Kaye was moving toward him following the argument over the sideburns. Judge Charles Spooner found DeOgburn guilty.
