THAT'S NOT A threatening gesture by I. Tommy Thomas but just a stretch as he talks to Jim Hartnett last week following the Chamber of Commerce coffee. (Staff photo by Raymond Lang) No Good to Have It If You Don't Tell The World About It

THAT'S NOT A threatening gesture by I. Tommy Thomas but just a stretch as he talks to Jim Hartnett last week following the Chamber of Commerce coffee. (Staff photo by Raymond Lang) Florida's got what it takes, but we've got to let people know about it. This is essentially what the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce heard Thursday of last week from the man whose job it is to sell Florida to potential residents and investors. Wendell Jarrard, chairman-director of the Florida Industrial Commission, said Florida must not be content just with increasing tourism. We must attract new residents and businesses. "There is no excuse for a state like Florida to have a feast and famine like we had recently," Jarrard said. "We've got a new slogan," Jarrard continued. "The best climate is a business climate.' You men have to go to have industrial development." To attract new residents, colorful ads, showing our palm trees, beaches and homes, have been placed in national magazines. To attract new businesses, state officials in Tallahassee are working with Florida businessmen. They hope their cooperative efforts will induce industry to invest in our state. In closing, Jarrard said state officials can do just so much. The rest is up to Floridians. They must roll out the welcome mat to newcomers by displaying a friendliness and courtesy they could not find elsewhere.

Slow Week In Building For Gables

Three vending machine shelters for $6,000 topped a slow week in the Coral Gables Building Department. The shelters, under construction at University of Miami at 5505 San Amaro Dr., 1301 Memorial Dr., and 5250 University Dr., brought last week's construction total to $16,653. Only four permits were issued for the entire week. The other permits went to Samuel Paetro, of 6870 Gratian St., pool, $3,000. Edward Corlett III, 4430 Ingraham Hwy., pool, $3,500. Sol Rovin, 11021 Paradella Ave., screen enclosure, $4,150. Figures do not include land values.

Man Flips Car But Is Unhurt

A 29-year-old man averted serious injury Friday morning when his foreign compact car was flipped over twice after being hit at the intersection of Granada Boulevard and Pisano Avenue. Amir K. Hedayat, of 27 Isidonia Ave., Apt. 1, was released from Doctors Hospital after being X-rayed and examined.

14 Named As Cheerers At Gables

By LEE SANDLER Correspondent New Junior Varsity Cheerleaders for Coral Gables High were announced Tuesday. Those named are Janice Dutcher, Kathy Lewis, Tamar Spector, Ronnie Weksler, Bev Sonen, Janice Johnson, Jackie Avant, Sue Nichols, Susan Benton, Sandy Clutter, Rosemary Heath, Janice Moore and Cindy Shepherd. Positions on the squad were awarded to these 14 girls after weeks of practice and try-outs after school. They will lead the student cheering section at the school's basketball games. Cavallettes, the Gables High marching girl's squad, tapped six girls for its organization earlier this week. The Cavallettes perform at the half-time shows during the football season. This six girls are Susan Acliee, Sally Nohlgren, Ingrid Skow, Gretchen Vanden Berg, Claudia Wilson and Suzanne Wolcott. Mike Machtey, president of Science and Math Honor Society, announced the tapping of six seniors for that organization recently. Those named are Kathy Baskin, Brant Brown, Carol Greenfield, Gervasio Prado, Harold Royer and John Shaw. In order to be eligible for the society, each applicant must have maintained a 3.66 grade average in his senior high math and science courses. He must also present an oral and written report to the membership. L'Allegro, music honor society, also tapped recently. President Les Medlin announced the new members as Howard Ehrlichman, Marilu Garcia, Alec Joseph, Linda Labianda, Tom Long. Joyce Morrill, Evelyn Rosner, Carol Schmeisser, Carol Derflinger and Byron Clay. L'Allegro is open to orchestra and band students and majorettes. Rusti Haussman, president of Quill and Scroll, the journalism honor society, announced the tapping of six junior journalists two weeks ago. The six tapped are Gretchen Vanden Berg, Joyce Denis, Margaret Morrison, Janet Hall, Donna Criswell and Lynn Fenster.

City May Keep Bus Ad Chore

Bert Burris, City and Advertising consultant, is looking in the feasibility of handling bus advertising for the Gables. Last week, the Commission discussed letting Miami Transit handle the program, but cooled on the idea when it learned that they wanted 55 per cent to handle the deal, not 30 per cent, as previously indicated. Net income had been estimated at $20,000 by Burris if Miami Transit had handled the business at 30%. The Commission has approved inside advertising and rear advertising on the buses and is undecided about side panels. Present revenue from inside advertising is $6,400, with the Chamber of Commerce, which handles the deal, getting half.
