Street Program Won't Detour Despite More Owners' Gripes
City Commissioners continue to get their lumps over their program to eliminate the bumps in Coral Gables streets. "As far as I'm concerned it's tax burden," said TV man A. Edward Stevens, whose shop and apartment are on Aragon Avenue near Ponce de Leon Boulevard. He walked out in a huff Tuesday. The Commission approved the rebuilding of Aragon from Le Jeune Road to Merrick Way. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hardiman, 101 Aragon, also complained about the assessment. "It may be a little bumpy, but there are no holes," he told the Commission. Mayor Robert L. Searle said the City's engineers had examined Aragon Avenue and found it needed rebuilding. "You should change your engineers," retorted Mrs. Hardiman. The Commission also approved rebuilding of Rosaro Avenue from South Dixie Highway to Menendez with installation of planting bins, concrete curb and gutter, sidewalks, and sprinkler. One property owner, Arthur McBride, objected to the $11.75 a front foot assessment. The assessment roll confirming the recent improvement of Giralda Avenue from Ponce de Leon Boulevard to Galiano Street was also approved by the City Commission. Front foot assessment was $7.22.

'Silly,' Evans Says
Editorial on Page 4 A recommendation by the Recreation Advisory Board to convert part of a City-owned tract near adjacent to Ponce de Leon High School for tennis and handball courts was labeled "silly" by Commissioner Franklin Evans Tuesday. "It's out of place," said Evans, who added the board should have presented a complete plan for development. Commissioner C. L. Dressel Jr. added his qualified opposition. "I'm not in favor of telling them to go ahead with the plan," said Dressel. Commissioner Joe Murphy defended the action of the board in its recommendation. He saw no other way the board could make recommendations to the commission. Mayor Robert L. Searle said the tract should be left alone until a comprehensive development plan evolves. No vote was taken on the recommendation.
