Was this request for a foreign student a bid for help in that direction? Was family prestige a factor? What did the Averys read? Was bigotry or prejudice apparent anywhere? The complete dossier went on to AFS headquarters in New York, and in June the Averys learned they could have a student. Through the Kiwanis, the Junior Woman's Club, and the Jaycees, the community raised $650. This fixed cost for every community goes into the general AFS scholarship fund. Some foreign families pay the entire expense; others give what they can. The total includes medical bills and other small expenses. Sharaf arrived in Glen Ellyn before the start of school, and the Averys settled her in a comfortable room on the first floor of their small brown house. Third eldest in a family of four girls and four boys, Sharaf is the daughter of a Karachi judge and plans to be a lawyer. She lives in a household run by five servants, one of whom works solely for her father. There is, of course, an ayah, the children's nurse, now quite elderly but retained forever as part of the family. At 33, Mrs. Rahman has a 20-year-old son. THE AVERYS' entire staff consists of a cleaning woman who comes every two weeks. Would this present a problem? It was made clear to the interviewers that Sharaf would be expected to do her share of the chores. She makes her bed and helps with the dishes. When Mrs. Avery brings home an armload of groceries, Sharaf is there as often as Midge to give her a hand. The sight of the cleaning woman driving up in her own car, though, still staggers the visitor a little. What normally is regarded as discipline Mrs. Avery prefers to call suggestion. As she put it, "We would use real discipline only if the child were in danger of hurting herself. So far we have needed none. We only suggest what is the custom here or what is a good rule to follow.
