Our feeling is that confidence in your partner is the backbone of the game, so we'll suggest only a few principles in which we strongly believe, to help you and your mate along the road to bridge success: 1. Sound opening bids. On the basis of A=4 points, K=3, Q=2, J=1, opening bids of one in a suit should include at least 14 points, of which there must be a minimum of 11 in high cards. (In other words, never count more than three points for distribution—singletons, voids, etc.) Any hand that does not include a minimum of either one ace or two kings should not be opened. The discerning reader will sense that we are stressing the value of aces and kings and playing down queens and jacks. This is exactly the way we feel, and as you gain experience you will begin to understand the reason behind this evaluation. 2. Five-Card Major Openings.
