Not Even Clothes in Pool Dampened the Auction

By HELEN REYNOLDS Times Society Editor George Radel, auctioneer, looked like a cowboy with his blue shirt open at the neck, plenty of tan, jaunty hat and a regular "spell." He was handling, for the third season, the annual sale of the Granada Chapter, Woman's Cancer Association of the University of Miami. The event was held March 28. It took place at the poolside and garden of the home of Mrs. Renata Magan, 5375 Orduna Dr. The sale opened at 11 a.m. and Radel began by saying; "Most of the glassware, candlesticks, vases, etcetra you see here came from my wife's inlaws — they hate me." It brought a laugh. As for the hostess, she was a good second for the auctioneer. Dressed in pretty cotton shorts and blouse with matching sun hat and sandals, she set the pace for most of the guests as to what to wear. Shorts and blouses vied with semi-formals and the shorts won out. Renata modeled a raccoon fur coat with matching clothes — wearing a face mask of the latest mode, painted face, long curling lashes and a blonde wig. The coat and hat brought $45 and there was spirited bidding. But Anne Wittich, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth C. Wittich, of Miami Shores, formerly of Coral Gables who goes to college in Tennessee, was made happy. She said, "Wish I had had the coat last winter, for it's cold up there." Radel said "when a blue eyelet lace dress over white went for $4.25; "You couldn't buy the holes in the lace for that." While the sun was hot, the wind was breezy and patrons about 150 men and women filled the folding chairs, around the pool and garden. Potato chips were served with soft drinks and since auctions are always interesting, patrons lingered on. It closed at 5 p.m. and $800 was counted as earned from their labors. There was a calamity, however. A large standing rack of dresses and suits toppled into the pool; it was that windy. Also a stand lamp about three feet with decorative base and shade, fell into the blue waters. Mrs. Edward T. Bullock, 719 Biltmore Way, whose husband teaches economics at the UM, came with Mrs. Warren Zinsmaster, 635 Almeria Ave. Mrs. Bullock says they are leaving for their beloved California in June. She was a good customer at the auction, remarked that people were generous and buyers seemed pleased with their purchases. Members and officers of the chapter are: Mrs. William C. Lewis, 4000 Malaga Ave., president; Mrs. Sam Dreyer, 6305 Casteneda St., vice president; Mrs. Eugene Munro Jr., 5040 Riviera Dr., second vice president. Mrs. Harry E.
