3 VACANT STORES
ARROWS POINT to three vacant or to be vacated Miracle Mile corners at Galiano Street. From left to right are Curlee's, Ray Allen's and Royal Palm Tours' old spot. (Times photo)
3 of 4 Mile Corners Go Begging
Three of four corners at the Miracle Mile — Galiano Street intersection are vacant or being vacated. Main reason—rent too high. First National Bank anchors the fourth corner. There is no indication that it is moving too. Only Curlee's Department Store on the northwest corner did not vacate because of high rent—the owners also own the building. "Our plans are to retire," said Sidney Winsberg of Curlee's. The store closed to the public last Saturday and stock is being disposed of privately. Winsberg said he plans to rent the building. Why did Royal Palm Tours move out of the southeast corner? "Rent," said William Connally. He had been located there for 12 years before progressive increases in rent made him cry uncle. Connally added competition from new shopping centers, change in the nature of his business caused partly by the new regime in Cuba, $2 fines and parking policies as reasons for his move. He's still got the same landlord—Coral Way Corp. — but he's now located a couple of doors east in a location admittedly not as good, but one he can afford. Ray Allen at 91 Miracle Mile is on a month to month rent basis and planning to move out soon with probable relocation on Ponce de Leon Boulevard in the fall, H. S. Pell, the manager said. High rent was also cited by Pell for the move. The building is owned by Robert Ablin. "There's no concerted move that I've been able to determine," said Lee Smith, Chamber of Commerce manager. Smith indicated he might take a survey of other Mile vacant stores.
