'ROUND TOWN
june gray woman's editor Now that the Cuban situation has eased slightly, we can start breathing again and cease worrying about whether Key West will slowly sink into the Atlantic from the troop build-up there. The reaction of the female population varied from accepting a fatalistic attitude to turning around in circles expending pent-up energy. Others rushed to the grocery store to purchase canned goods and bottled water. Especially interesting was the conversation, I overheard between two young mothers. One said she was not going to worry because she read in the newspaper that none of the Cuban missiles were aimed at South Florida. Furthermore, if we were hit, it would be over so quickly that no one would have need for canned goods. The other one commented that she hoped enough people would stay home from her bridge group the next day that the others would be unable to play, and they could all go home. Another mother reported if we did not have a war, she would never have to buy another can of baby food. And Sen. George Smathers' wife said he was called to Washington so quickly last week, he did not even have time to grab his shaving kit, much less his suitcase. In spite of "these times that try men's souls," everyday life must go on. Mrs. J. Marco Bishop, 3401 Granada Blvd. and president of the Dade County Federation of Women's Clubs, has been attending president's receptions, at least one a day and occasionally two, despite a broken toe for the past two weeks. She was forced to wear bedroom slippers to one reception the day after she broke her toe. To the others for the past two weeks, she has had to wear the same pair of shoes — a pair of black medium-heeled thongs, which she normally wears around the pool. She could wear these only after searching through half the downtown stores for hose which can be worn with thongs without developing runs. Ever wonder how quiet is "quiet as a mouse?" I think I discovered the answer to this riddle while working late alone at the office this week. The solution — being quiet enough myself so that a mouse came out of his hiding place and scampered here and there across the floor without noticing my presence.
