COUNTY LINE with Ed Knight

METRO IS at crossroads. The time has come for the county or the cities to be supreme. The original idea behind Metro was for the county government to be the master of the cities. • BUT IT HASN'T worked out this way. The cities are still cities, every little one of them, with one city, Islandia, added to the list since the inception of Metro four years ago. • THE CITIES are reluctant to give even the least little power to Metro. But Metro is growing every day and we are facing now a giant power struggle. Feelers are going out through the dailies. The big question is behind it all—will the cities or Metro win out? • THE FORKS IN the road are perfectly clear — should the cities annex county land or should most of the cities be disolved, with the remaining cities in complete subservience to Metro. • UNDER THE present situation, those residents living in municipalities are paying double taxes, with the great amound of their taxes going for benefits they can never derive. • METRO IS advancing with its services in apparent disregard for the attitudes of the cities. Metro's police, fire, garbage and trash collection services are getting better and more reliable every week. • METRO IS planning parks, swimming pools, recreation programs, street rebuilding and resurfacings, zoning and planning programs and sewage systems and disposal plants. • AND DO YOU know who's paying for most all of this? The fellow living in the municipality, that's who. He's supporting not one but two police and fire departments, two recreation programs, and two court jurisdictions. • IT IS A RIDICULOUS situation. But the cities are proud and still thumbing their nose at Metro while Metro is gaining momentum with every added service to the unincorporated areas. • THE PERFECT plan would be for the larger municipalities to annex until there would be no more unincorporated lands, Then Metro could rid itself of municipal service problems and concern itself more with health, safety and welfare. • BUT METRO has gone too far to turn everything over to the municipalities. When you call for a Metro police officer now he's there in 20 minutes. It used to take a day or two for this same service. • NEW SWIMMING pools are going to be ready for next summer's hot weather. These pools are in the unincorporated areas, not in cities — but the city residents are helping to foot the bill. • AT A PUBLIC hearing in South Miami last week dealing with the proposed annexation of county lands to the city, there wasn't a single county resident who even hinted he wanted to be annexed into South Miami. No one wants the added tax burden. • I HEARD FOR the first time a triumphant vote of confidence for Metro. These residents said glowing words for Metro. They live in the county, with just enough independence to laugh at double taxation and enough services to feel they're living as one does in the city.

She Says Ed Knight Is Wrong

EDITOR: May I please call to your attention an error in the article by Edwin Knight about the hospital sewer and the proposed self-service laundry in last week's Guide? Mr. Knight's article states "the business would include the first self-service dry cleaning plant in the South Miami Area." If Mr. Knight is interested in the truth, I'd like to suggest that he visit the Sunset Coin Laundry at 5618 Sunset Drive, where my neighbors and I have been doing our dry cleaning for over two months — and very satisfactorily. Isn't an apology to its owner and operator in order? MRS. S. D. HOLBROOK 1540 San Remo Ave. Coral Gables

Pilots Await FAA Answer On Tamiami

Pilots awaiting the phase out of Tamiami Airport have been told by the Federal Aviation Authority they'll probably get an answer in approximately two weeks. FAA officials came into the Oct. 12 meeting already convinced the airport should be closed, said Wilbur Provost, chairman of the Committee for Tamiami. But after they had heard the pilots out, a seed of doubt was planted in the FAA minds, Provost believes. At least that's what the pilots hope, he said. Arvin Baskright, director of the Atlanta District for the FAA, met with the pilots following a request for rehearing. He was accompanied by Martin Hansen, chief controller of the Miami International Airport tower. Vernon Burt, local representative for the Airplane Operators and Pilots Association, was the chief spokesman for the Tamiami pilots at the meeting. The County and FAA agreed long ago to the phasing out of Tamiami and moving operations to Opa-locka, the former site of a Navy base. Provost said Baskright told the pilots the military had no intention of returning to Opa-locka, but only 10-days later the Cuban crisis erupted and the Air Force moved back in.
