DR. HERMAN MEYER CHAIRMAN UM Forms Faculty Senate
The University of Miami faculty has organized itself into a 41-member Senate and that body was formally seated Dec. 3 with Dr. Herman Meyer of the Mathematics Department as chairman. Dr. William Halstead is vice chairman. The Senate, which replaces the Faculty Council and enlarges the membership of the former group, has been conceived of for a year or more. Dr. Meyer said that the concept is quite conventional and that most large schools in the U.S. have something similar. General items of business: Curriculum, academic standards and other matters of concern to the faculty. The Board of Trustees has final authority, the Senate chairman noted, and the Senate isn't intended as a disciplinary organization, an investigative one or anything similar. It might be said that its' a way to make the faculty's voice heard on issues pertaining to it. With an enlarged membership, greater proportional representation is also achieved. Members of the Senate are Drs. Manley L. Ross, J. H. Couliette, Luella N. Dambaugh, M. J. Dijkman, R. Y. Ellison, William Halstead. W. Ivan Hoy, Herman Meyer, J. A. Reynolds, Harry S.
