MEET THE Mathes'

BLESS this house, Oh, Lord. We pray make it safe by night and day." Those words are in the foyer on a wall plaque as you enter the residence of Dr. and Mrs. Frank Alfred Mathes at 900 University Dr. He's pastor at Granada Presbyterian Church and the home is on one end of the block and the church at the other. Not only Mrs. Mathes greets you at the door but "So-Long," their brown Dachshund, is with her. Here's a room-by-room tour of the Mathes' pink house: LIVING ROOM: Warm and intimate. Wall-to-wall carpeting with an open beam ceiling. Bright chrysanthemums accent a coffee table. A love seat and rocking chair afford a generous view of University Drive. On the wall are portraits of the four Mathes daughters, taken at an earlier date. Today, they're Rachel, 21, studying voice on a Fulbright Scholarship at the Academy of Music in Vienna; Elizabeth, 15, Gables High junior; Martha, 12, and Beecher, 9, both students at Ponce Junior High. FLORIDA ROOM: This is the family's room. There's a piano, a dollhouse in one corner, a scatter rug, a heavily-laden reading table, sofas and plenty of easy chairs. There's also an archery target. "We use it for everything," says Mrs. Mathes. "Sunday School meetings; deacons and deaconesses have met here and it's a parking garage for bycycles. Everything that couldn't fit in the house we put here!" KITCHEN: It's done mostly in yellow with red trim. DINING ROOM: There's a sparkling chandelier over an oval table One wall has a mirror. There's a clock the minister bought in Switzerland and a plaque appropriate to the room, reading: "Give us our daily bread." ELIZABETH'S BEDROOM: Lavender brings this room to life; it's in the bedspread and picked up in the wallpaper. MATHES BEDROOM, GUEST ROOM: These rooms, too, have their special charm with the latter having a canopy bed with delicately turned woodwork.
