‘Alright, Honey, Tooth's Out’
By RAYMOND LANG Times Reporter The dentist, bending over a little girl, made a few deft motions with his hand. "All right, honey," Dr. Richard Suviron said as he straightened up, "you just had a tooth taken out." So passed one recent morning at the dental clinic for needy children started 23 years ago by the Coral Gables Junior Woman's Club. "There was a 10-year-old girl that had cerebral palsy that we worked on," recalled dental clinic chairman, Mrs. Victor Clarke, 2301 Country Club Prado. "And there was a 16-year-old girl," she went on recalling another case, "and we made her an upper partial denture. "It made a great deal of improvement in her appearance and we were so glad." It'll cost almost $4,000 this year to operate this clinic, open Monday through Fridays, morning 'til noon. Last year, 115 children, representing 600-patient visits, were treated. Dr. Suviron and Dr. John Roll receive a salary for their morning work and another dentist, Dr. Herbert Levin, donates an afternoon a month. It's the school nurse in this county-wide program who refers a child to the clinic. "We have caseworkers," said Mrs. Clarke, "who visit the home of each child to make sure they are needy. "We have so many who apply we must be sure we have the neediest of the needy." The caseworkers, as well as the 20 women who are volunteer dental assistants, are all Club members who put aside their housework and hire babysitters for the children to help run this program. Others who make the clinic click are the children's supervisor, Mrs. May Van Sickle; dental hygienists, Mrs. Bernard Singer, Mrs. Ree Boehme and Miss Marilyn Sturgeon. Assistant clinic chairman is Mrs. Richard Sentry. Club president is Mrs. Joseph Pereno Jr. DENTIST PROBES A CHILD'S TEETH CHILD NERVOUS ... NURSE HOLDS HAND THIS CHILD'S TEETH is their concern.
