Marilyn Elaine Hurwitz Plans Summer Wedding
Mr. and Mrs. Eli Hurwitz, 112 Avila Ct., announce the engagement of their daughter Marilyn Elaine to Ronald Allan Shapo, son of Mrs. Mitchell Shapo and the late Mr. Shapo, 1600 SW 17th Ave. A summer wedding is planned. A senior at the University of Miami, the bride-elect will be graduated next August and plans to teach in September. She is a graduate of Coral Gables High School and was charter president of Coral Gables B'nai B'rith Girls. Her fiance is a UM graduate where he was treasurer of the Student Government. He is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, leadership honorary; Phi Kappa Phi, scholastic honorary; Beta Gamma Sigma and Beta Alpha Psi, business honoraries. Marilyn Elaine Hurwitz

Southwest Miami High School honored one of its teachers, Gableite Mrs. Mabel Staats, last week with a bulletin board labeled "We Point With Pride." The bulletin board depicts the 12 national and state and 14 local honors which the English department has won under her guidance. The Southwest English Department also gave a tea in her honor Tuesday afternoon of last week. * * * "The Joy and Beauty of Christmas in Song" will be given by the Madrigals of the Coral Gables Music Club at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Coral Gables Woman's Club. A trio will be composed of Myrna Shevin, soprano; Muriel Reark, second soprano; and Betty Stoltz, alto. * * * Mrs. Jerome Kersting, 600 Alcazar Ave., has just returned from spending two weeks in Louisville, Ky., caring for her sick daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Speis. Another daughter, Angelia LeJeune and her husband Samuel moved back to their Coral Gables home, 747 Majorca Ave., two weeks ago. They had been living in Louisville for the past year caring for Samuel's mother, who died recently from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Retired Navy nurse, Jane Pierson, was presented with a "35 Year Star" by the Nan Sue Porter Post No. 156, All Ex-Servicewoman's Post, American Legion, at their 12th anniversary dinner Saturday night at the Rocky Graziana Restaurant. She came to Florida 13 years ago after retiring in 1949. From 1917-18, she served as a Navy nurse at Hampton Rhodes, Va., and also worked at Georgetown Hospital, Washington, D.C., caring for flu epidemic patients. A native of Pataskala, Ohio, the 77-year-old Miss Pierson, served for 16 years as a public health nurse at Ellis Island at the Marine Hospital for Merchant Marine personnel. * * * Mr. and Mrs. James S. Greene, 1002 Capri St., are expecting their son home for the Christmas holidays. He is Marine Air Cadet James S. Greene Jr., in training at Pensacola. He expects to get his wings in March. He's training for helicopter duty. Cadet Greene attended Duke University, Durham, N.C., before entering the service.

The son and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Caplan are spending a year in college at the University of Southern California at Los Angeles. They are Carolyn and Richard Caplan. Carolyn is a Gables High graduate and Richard from Miami High. Both attended the University of Florida before going West, where they have relatives. Mr. Caplan says the children probably will come back East for next year's schooling. Both are psychology majors. * * * John R. McElwee, son of Mr. and Mrs. James F. McElwee, 57 Campina Ct., was advanced to machinist's mate second class, United States Navy, while serving aboard the destroyer USS Stribling.
