Gulf Will Have Enviable View
THESE MEN ARE 7 stories up on the Gables' newest building, Gulf Oil. They gathered last Friday afternoon to celebrate, informally, the topping out of the final story. Pointing the way is developer Ed Rogers. To the left rear is Architect Ed Rempe while at right is associate architect Jack Meredith. "What a view!" said Ed Rogers enthusiastically last Friday as he stood high above 99% of the Gables skyline. Slightly to the northeast he could see the bulge of downtown Miami thrust up against the sky. Turning clockwise to the southeast, the Coconut Grove Bank showed its modern form near Dinner Key. As he swept on in the arc, nearly completely turned around, he came to the only building in the Gables higher than the one on which he stood: That's the VA Hospital on the west side of the City with its 17 stories. Rogers is developer of the seven-story Gulf Building on Alhambra near the First Presbyterian Church. The top story's been reached and the work crew had an informal celebration late Friday afternoon. Tak Kibby, Gulf's man in charge of the Western Hemisphere Exploration forces here, dropped by (or up). Bob Leitch of Gulf was there along with contractor Ross Apgar. Architect Ed Rempe and associate Jack Meredith. Occupancy is set for late February. The Gables, as seen from the top of Gulf's new heights, in a panorama of orderly homes and streets heavily bordered with trees and shrubs. Like the man said: What a view.

WITH PROPER CREDITS That Skunk Story Gets Retold
A Coral Gables Police officer's method of getting rid of skunks may be okay for some, but one Gables housewife believes in more direct measures. Officer Charles A. Gouvela's advice to Mrs. Edward Warner, 4805 Riviera Dr., to close all the doors to her home except the room the skunk was in (and the front and rear doors) may be all right, but she did not wait to find out. After she had called police at 2:36 a.m. Nov. 22 and three officers were unable to come up with a solution to the problem, Mrs. Warner took action. She called Biscayne Exterminators at 4 a.m. and asked for help. Surprisingly, they came. Bill Snare (no joke intended), and his son, Bob, picked up the offensive kitty and tossed him out bodily, just like that. She hired them on the spot to handle all her future exterminating problems. The whole thing created quite a stink around the Warner home for a while, and Mrs. Warner said she wanted the right people to get credit for solving her pet problem. Why couldn't her husband handle the job? He could have—except he was away on a hunting trip.
Unless Santa Comes Afore Midnight He'll Be Dry
Businesses or private clubs selling liquor will have to shut down their bars at midnight Christmas eve, the City Commission ruled Tuesday. They may not reopen again until 7 a.m. Christmas day. But they may stay open until 2 a.m. New Year's Day, the Commission decided. Their decision followed a request from Ben Gaines, owner of the new Holiday Inn, to open until 2 a.m. on both holidays. Gaines, whose hotel is scheduled to open Dec. 18, said he would not open his cocktail bar until 10 a.m. in exchange. The hotel is the first to have been granted a liquor license since the days of the Miami Biltmore Hotel. The City's liquor ordinance requires a normal 7 a.m. to midnight weekday limit on sale of liquor and 1 a.m. Sunday.
