Temple Judea Eyes New Home
Temple Judea, the Gables' Liberal Jewish congregation, is seeking approval of a fund drive for acquisition of a new site and building worth approximately $350,000. A congregational meeting has okayed the idea unanimously. Now, two-thirds of the congregation are being asked to sanction it before the drive officially begins. Not date is set for building. President Herbert Gelernter says it could be three, four or five years from now. The idea is to start saving against that day. The congregation is asking all members to pledge not less than $300, payable $100 a year beginning in the fiscal year June 1, 1963. All new members would be asked for the same pledge. Why a new temple? Says Gelernter: "1. Our present facilities are a series of hastily improved additions to meet critical needs. "2. Our present site is in a commercial area and no longer strategically located for the Jewish population of Coral Gables. "3. There is no possible solution for our parking problem. "4. A new temple with modern facilities will definitely attract new members." Gelernter continued: "Why start with a building fund at this time? Choice property in Coral Gables keeps diminishing. "Today, any desirable site will cost approximately $90,000. An obligation of $300 by at least 200 members will produce $60,000 in three years." The Temple president said that if the congregation will raise $60,000, the board of directors will get up the remaining $30,000. He said the temple considers its present holdings worth $190,000 and that several groups, including the American Legion post here, have shown an interest in the property. The Temple has an operating budget of $102,000 a year and some 200 families as members. Rabbi Mordecai Podet is the rabbi. The temple is located at 320 Palermo Ave., between Le Jeune Road and Salzedo Street.
