Dogs Lead Man's Life Very Well

By JUNE GRAY Woman's Editor Dogs that walk like people. Preston Beaudoin owns two dogs who are proficient in the art of marathon or distance upright walking. Beaudoin's secret to teaching his dogs to walk like people is to start building their muscles at a very young age. He does not believe in long training sessions but prefers many short ones. Beaujay, a 14-month-old mixture of poodle and Kerry Blue terrier, could walk at four months and 10-month-old La Rue Nanette, a large miniature black poodle, could walk at three months. FEMALES RESPOND QUICKER Beaudoin does not think Nanette is smarter than Beaujay but she is quicker to respond to directions. He has found that most females respond quicker than males because they fear punishment more than males. Beaudoin, who has never been without a dog since he was eight, has always raised them as a hobby because he gets a thrill out of getting them to do odd things. But he is looking for a partner to help him organize a high school for dogs. "I am confident I could train four dogs at a time," Beaudoin, who is in lawn service business, said, "and I would like to get them between the ages of seven weeks and six months, but I will take any dog up to six years." DOGS LIKE PEOPLE He says dogs are just like people. Some are smart and some are dumb and some will figure you out quicker than you can figure them out. "It never pays to let a dog get by with anything. They will try you out to see how strict you are going to be," he declares. When Beaujay plays "bad-boy," he does not hide his face on his paws, but puts his face between his paws so that he can sneak a glance at you to see whether you are actually mad or only pretending. Both dogs will wear clothes without any objection as well as glasses, hats, and carry a pipe between their teeth. They also will pull Beaudoin's handkerchief from his hip pocket or pick up an article he drops. When walking down the street, everyone stops Beaudoin to talk about the dogs. "They make real conversation pieces, and I never meet a stranger; the dogs form a common bond between me and the people I meet," Beaudoin observed. DOG LEADS DOG Either dog will lead the other by the leash when walking. While standing upright, Beaujay can balance a glass of water on his head and stand, not on his head, but his forepaws. He also tells Beaudoin every time the phone rings because Beaudoin is hard of hearing. Another trick the dogs like is jumping through hoops. One dog will stand upright with a hoop in its mouth and the other will jump through it. They develop balance by carrying a 44-inch oak stick in their mouths. Beaudoin's dogs are tough. They work out every day in his back yard at 10425 SW 42nd Ter. to keep in good health. He is going to have to sell Nanette because his wife Eve wants only one dog in the house, Beaujay. But Beaudoin is proud of both his dogs and they are so well-trained they will respond to signals as well as voice commands. Beaujay was sold several months to an elderly couple, Mr. and Mrs. Lawton Stenerson, but they became ill and could not care for him so they brought him back to the Beaudoins eight weeks ago without any return of money. "We were certainly glad to get him back. My wife and I had been lonesome from the time he left," Beaudoin said, "and Beaujay seemed glad to be back. Each week the old lady comes to see him and brings him a gift." -Times Photos by RAYMOND LANG NANETTE LEAPS AS BEAUJAY, BEAUDOIN HOLD HOOP NANETTE is right at home with her pipe, glasses and hat. And if she could really watch TV her favorite show would naturally be Huckleberry Hound.
