Nuclear Physics Pioneer Will Speak At UM
Dr. Franco Rasetti, a pioneer in nuclear physics research, will lecture Thursday, Mar. 23, at the University of Miami. His topic will be "From Cosmic Rays to Giant Accelerators." The lecture at 4 p.m. in Room 315, Merrick Building, will be the sixth in a series sponsored by Delta Theta Mu, arts and sciences honorary, and the UM student government. Admission to the public is by $1 donation. A co-discoverer of the "slow neutron" which paved the way for development of the atom bomb and peaceful uses of atomic energy, Dr. Rasetti has been with Johns Hopkins University since 1950. He served one semester as visiting professor of physics at the University of Miami in 1958-1959. A colleague of the late Enrico Fermi, Dr. Rasetti worked with the great Italian physicist at the University of Rome in the 1930's. It was during this time that they discovered the properties of the "slow neutron," a key step in the subsequent development of practical applications of nuclear energy.

Library News Hummingbird Book Fascinates
By EVELYN DUNCAN Reference Librarian For a truly outstanding gift you might like to consider a remarkable new book by Crawford Greenwalt, called simply, "Hummingbirds". It can be seen in the Reference Department of the Coral Gables Public Library. The color photographs, taken with a specially designed, ultra high speed camera, are a delight to the eye. Each of the 70 color portraits are actual life size and the lovely, prismatic colors are reproduced with astonishing accuracy. An interesting text includes a detailed discussion of "feathers, color and iridescence" and an utterly absorbing chapter on the technique of flight. A series of pictures shows how a hummingbird is able to fly backward as well as forward! One warning: If you do buy this book to give away, better select an alternative gift at the same time, for you will be sorely tempted to keep this one for yourself!
