First In Area | Grove Girl Scouts Plan Member Tea

First In Area Grove Girl Scouts Plan Member Tea By MAURICE LE VOYER On "Flag Day," June 14, 1923, Alligator, Troop 1, of Coconut Grove Girl Scouts, received its charter. This was the first Girl Scout organization in Dade County. Thirty-eight years later the Mariner Alligator Ship 1, a counterpart of the original Alligator Troop 1, will hold a tea for all former members of the Troop. The tea will be held at the Eastern Star Hall, 2833 Bird Ave., Coconut Grove, April 3, 2-5 p.m. First Leader The late Mrs. Harry Crawford was the troop's first leader. She was assisted by Mrs. Lillian Justison, 4094 Raynolds Ave., Coconut Grove, and Mrs. Cornelia Ozone, 3623 Royal Palm Ave., Coconut Grove. Mrs. Crawford and Mrs. Justison were asked to provide a glee club for graduation exercises at Coconut Grove High School by Principal A. L. Isaac. From this glee club was formed the first troop of the local Girl Scout organization. The American Legion Auxiliary sponsored the troop, and its first meeting was held at the Community Club, which is now the American Legion Post in Coconut Grove. With the help of community contributions and through troop fund raising drives, a camping hut, "Trail Lodge", was built on property in the Old Cutler Highway-Davis Road vicinity. The troop participated in community activities such as filling stockings for the Legion's Christmas party for Coconut Grove children, Christmas caroling, and at least two parades a year. The Auxiliary also sponsored an annual Mother-Daughter troop banquet. The first troop, in its long period of existence, has had only nine adult leaders, Mrs. Harry Crawford, Mrs. Margaret Farley, Mrs. Harold F. Loomis, Mrs. John G. York, Mrs. R. P. McKie, Mrs. Hilton Homan, Mrs. Thelma (Bryson) Wilson, Mrs. Minnie Lee (Bryson) Majewski and Mrs. Kay Hays. In 1942, and with the passing years, the girls transferred from the intermediate troop into a Senior Girl Scout troop and were working for their Senior Service Scout badges. They worked with the Red Cross in stringing buttons and sewing clothes for the children overseas, baked 15,000 cookies for the Servicemen's Center in Miami in a two and a half year period, and assisted in many other useful wartime activities for the community. In 1944, the girls again transferred, this time for a senior troop in a Mariner Ship. This was the third Ship to be organized in Dade County. They maintained the name Alligator and called the ship "Alligator Ship 1." In 1951, under the leadership of Mrs. Minnie Lee Majewski, 3281 SW 28th Street, the troop was transferred to a third grade Brownie class with Senior Mariner, Pat Cooper, as the "big sister" to the new girls. These same Brownies are now members of Mariner Alligator Ship 1 and it is their goal to have a real Troop 1 homecoming. Any former members of troop 1 who have not been contacted concerning the forthcoming tea are requested to contact either Mrs. Majewski, HI 6-7272 or Mrs. Parsons, CE 5-9120.
