Church Will Dedicate New Chapel

A beautiful chapel, seating 120, completely furnished and airconditioned, will be dedicated by members of the Coral Gables Congregational Church Sunday morning at 10:30. The dedication service will be held in the patio of the church. The chapel is a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Moye in memory of their parents. It was designed by T. Tripp Russell and Associates and built by the Babcock Co. at a cost of approximately $35,000. Furnishings and garden at a cost of some $17,000 were contributed by the members. Garden Contributed Entrance is made from DeSoto Boulevard through a lovely garden contributed by Dr. and Mrs. Arthur Weiland. The chapel is designed in keeping with the Spanish motif of the sanctuary. The focus of attention is a beautiful pink altar made of St. Florient Rose marble, and the theme of the window above the altar is the Twenty-Third Psalm. Companion windows on each side of the nave picture The Lord's Prayer and The Beatitudes. The ceiling is made of West Coast larchwood and is supported by flowing arches and modified Doric columns. The columns and arches received the Craftsman's Award in 1960 for beauty in design. The chapel is equipped with bride's room and anteroom for the groom, a fine church organ contributed by Dr. and Mrs. John C. Fetzer. Pews and pulpit furnishings are of matching wood with the ceiling. Building Program The dedication of the chapel is a culmination of a building program started 10 years ago. During this time five major buildings have been erected for a congregation that now numbers some 1200. The Coral Gables Congregational Church was designed as the Church Beautiful in the City Beautiful and was the first church built in this city. The land on which the church is built comprises more than a city block and was donated in 1922 by George Merrick, the Founder of Coral Gables. Additional properties on Columbus Boulevard, opposite the church, have been bought for buildings and parking. 36 Years Ago It was on Palm Sunday, 36 years ago, that the sanctuary and tower of the church were dedicated. This was the 75th building permit issued by the City of Coral Gables. In 10 years the church has grown from 150 to 1200. The church has a program of religious education of service and fellowship that ministers to all ages. A unique and vital organization is made up of retired people, known as the Leisure Club, which has received nation-wide recognition. Services of dedication will begin at 10:30 and be concluded by 11 o'clock. The services of worship will be as usual at 9:30 and 11:00. Local dignitaries and friends will attend. The City of Coral Gables has arranged for all available space around the church and on city parking lots to be made available.
