City Drivers To Show Skill In Road-e-o

Coral Gables city employes who drive motor vehicles in their work will compete in a Road-e-o to demonstrate their safe-driving abilities. The competition will extend [?] April 8 through 29. Each contestant will drive the type of vehicle he normally uses in his work. Judges will pick 18 winners in six different vehicle classifications depending on type and weight. Winners will not only receive recognition as the city's most skilled drivers but also tr[?] hies, certificates of merit and (perhaps most prized of all) extra days of annual leave. Will Compete Four of the winners will go on to represent Coral Gables in competition with drivers from other cities and from the county. They will compete in the Dade County Road-e-o which will be held on May 20. [?]e Coral Gables contest, both preliminaries and finals, will be run off on a Road-e-o course set up at the City Incinerator, 7200 SW 28th St. Drivers will be judged on such maneuvers as skillful parallel parking, maneuvering a serpentine course, accurate judgement of clearances and other safety-lin[?]d abilities. Overall Program This competition is part of the overall safety program for city employes which has been developed by the Personnel Department. Robert Harrison, personnel director for the city, points out that while the Road-e-o is not actually a safety contest, it does require the competin[?] Irivers to be alert and precise in operating their vehicles.

Chamber Of Commerce Manager Sees Gables, Likes What's Here

By GAIL MARSHALL "My impressions of Coral Gables are exceedingly good," Lee Smith said as he relaxed behind his desk in the Chamber of Commerce office. "People living in the Gables overlook the beneficial aspects of community living, because they tend to be swallowed up in the fast pace of this world." Smith has returned to this city after working in other parts of Florida for 10 years to become manager of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. "We must remember that things are good in our own back yard," he said. "People squabble and feud about the problems and things they don't like — and this is good because it brings about improvement, but we must never lose sight of our beautiful surroundings." Navy Veteran The 36-year-old Navy veteran discussed the chamber's desires for the "City Beautiful." "We want the homes that are being built today to equal the high caliber of homes that are already situated here. Many people think that taxes in the Gables are too high," he added. "Actually they are very reasonable when we consider the quality of homes here." Smith received a Bachelor of Science degree from Boston University and was graduated from the Southeast Institute for Chamber of Commerce Executives. He also did two years of graduate study there and received the Larry Dickie Memorial Scholarship from the United States Chamber of Commerce for second-year attendance at the institute. Main Problem The young executive discussed what he considers to be one of his main problems — lack of an efficient communication system. He places the blame on Coral Gables becoming an increasingly metropolitan area, saying that the Chamber tends to lose contact with organizations working toward the betterment of the community. "We may be depending more and more on THE TIMES to help us with this," he added. One of the solutions proposed for the problem is now being activated. A committee is forming a new program of work for the Chamber which is voted on and supplemented by the membership. The Chamber solidifies the final list into concrete, workable projects. Ten Years Miami-born Smith has been associated with Chamber of Commerce organizations for about 10 years. In 1951 he was assistant manager in the Gables chamber before moving to Bartow to manage that chamber. He managed the Del Ray Beach chamber form 1956, until he returned to Coral Gables this year. Smith and his wife, Barbara, have three children: Nancy, 9, Karen, 7, and Steve, 1. Asked about his hobbies, Smith replied, "Generally fishing and golf, but I never do either one. I try, but never have the time." As a final note on the chamber's programs, Smith said, "The Chamber of Commerce is interested in maintaining a healthy business economy. I feel there is an increasing trend to move the chamber's activities in a wider scope, including educational, social and recreational projects. They are all necessary in maintaining the life-blood of the community — business." LEE SMITH

The age of dinosaurs lingers on four rarely visited islands of Indonesia, the National Geographic Society says. There, 10 foot-long lizards still stalk prey. They often weigh 200 lbs.
