Young woman assaulted in her SD home

police blotter A 27-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in her South Dade home Wednesday, April 21 at 1 a.m. According to police, the woman was asleep when a man broke into her place through a sliding glass door and raped her. The rapist, still at large, is described as a white male in his mid-20s, five feet, eight or nine inches tall, weighing 160 pounds. He reportedly has medium length brown hair and a short beard. Beating Sixty-five year old James Walton, who lives at 10071 W. Fern St., Perrine, was beaten in his home Tuesday April 20, at 10:30 p.m. Officers say that Walton answered a knock at his door only to be hit in the face and pushed aside by two intruders. The burglars beat Walton, trying to force him to give them money. When the elderly man screamed, the men took off through a back door, empty-handed. Walton was treated for cuts and bruises at a South Dade clinic and released. Purse snatch A 74-year-old South Dade woman was bullied on her way to do her grocery shopping Tuesday, April 20, at 3 p.m. Lolie Lugo was walking in the parking lot of the Grand Union at 13541 S. Dixie Hwy. when two youths came up from behind and pushed her down, police say. The juveniles were chased away by two witnesses, and one of them was caught. Officers found the other youth at his home. Ms. Lugo was not seriously injured. The boys, both 14 years old, were apparently trying to steal her purse, according to police. Farm Store hit A man carrying a brown paper bag strolled into a Farm Store in South Dade Sunday, April 25, and made off with the cash register drawer. Police say that employe Kitty Jolly, 60, was working in the store at 5885 SW 40th St., when an intruder, indicating he had a gun, forced her to open the cash register. The thief then dropped the cash drawer in his bag and hopped into a waiting car.

New police station will sport heliport

The Southwest Regional Police Station, to be located at SW 117th Avenue and 75th Street, is nearly half completed, with a completion date set for mid-September. The $787,000 complex, which will house a newly formed police district, will be headed by Capt. Richard Windsor, temporarily stationed at the South Dade Regional Police Station. Similar in construction to the recently opened South Dade station, the new complex will have a heliport on the roof, specially constructed and reinforced with steel to hold the weight of the chopper. According to Capt. James Ross, chief of South Dade's Metro substation, the helicopter and heliport have proved a valuable tool for police officers in South Dade. "We have been using a chopper since we moved to the new station in December and it has served as a deterrent to burglars, in catching robbers and in finding stolen cars," Ross said. "If we have a police car stuck in traffic, the helicopter can follow a suspect and keep patrolmen informed at all times," Ross said. "It has also been a valuable tool in our rescue operations."
