How quickly they forget once the limelight fades

p. j. gladnick I sat down on a park bench just outside the South Miami library with some books I checked out. On the other end of the bench was sitting a rather forlorn looking fellow idly feeding the pigeons. "Nice weather today stranger," I said casually. "STRANGER! You actually called me stranger? Don't you even know who I am?" exclaimed my bench partner. "Should I know you?" I asked. "How soon they forget!" he buried his face in his hands. "Gee, I'm sorry. Maybe if you tell me your name it may help my memory." "I'm Bruce Springsteen. Why only a few weeks ago I was on the covers of both Newsweek and Time magazines. Now they have to ask me my name." "Your name still doesn't ring a bell. What do you do Mr... . uh Springsteen?" "I don't do anything in particular. I am or rather was, a celebrity." "O.K. . what were you known for then?" "I was known as the "next Bob Dylan," he answered. "But don't you have to do something to be a celebrity?" "You must really be naive. Let me ask you, what does Lorna Luft do?" "Well, she appears in photo magazines going into nightclubs with Burt Reynolds." "I repeat, what does she do?" "Hmm. Let's see. Isn't she the daughter or sister of somebody famous?" "That's what she is, not what she does." "It seems like she must do something in order to get all that publicity," I insisted. "Does she act?" "No." "Does she sing?" "No." "Does she dance?" "No." "I rest my case," he concluded. "Sounds like a good deal to be a celebrity," I mused. "It's nice while it lasts but unfortunately the public quickly forgets you when you're a celebrity. I was hailed as the spokesman of a generation and yet within a couple of weeks everyone forgot about me." "Is that how you ended up on the park bench?" "It was either this or daytime game shows on television." "Game shows?" "Whenever the fame of a celebrity slips he tries to keep himself in the public eye by appearing on as many game shows as possible." "So why didn't you go the game show route?" "It's too humiliating. I just couldn't stoop to the point where I would be sitting between George Hamilton and Brett Somers answering questions about Raquel Welch's favorite flavor of ice cream." "I suppose the park bench is a more dignified way to fade away." "It certainly is. By the way, would you mind moving to another bench? I'm expecting Sonny Bono here any time now."

look alikes She's a double for Liz Taylor

Claire Liz All of her friends tell Claire Francis that she looks like Elizabeth Taylor and it certainly seems they know a look alike when they see one. Claire, who lives at 9015 SW 56th Terr., is the final entry in the Times/Guide Look Alike contest. We received more entries for the contest than we could publish but chose from them what we thought were the closest matches to famous people. Thanks to everyone who took the time to enter. Our three winners will be published in next Wednesday's paper.
