Field Day will be school's first

Saturday, May 1 will be SMSH's first annual "Field Day." Among events to be featured at the affair will be the sack race, three-legged race, and the infamous wheelbarrow race for those who prefer to consume vast amounts of dirt. Students have paired off and are practicing for their big debut Saturday at 9:30 a.m. The SMSH girls' softball team finished their 1976 season with a 6-2 record. The girls performed to a maximum and were always enthusiastic. Their undying spirit proved to be an asset to their game. Coached by Linda Truitt, the girls were led by outstanding captains Tajuana Livingston, Betty Bradley, and Judith Sands. Carlos Tandron broke the Dade County shot put record by two inches at the GMAC Southern division finals. Tandron heaved the heavy iron weight a total of 60 feet 1-1/2 inches. The Cobra tennis teams finished out their season with 6-8 and 8-3 records for the boys and girls respectively. Led by Todd Andrews, the boys' team, which is composed mostly of sophomores, performed with an amazing amount of agility and quickness on the courts. Outstanding players were: Jeff Heier, Joe Lamp'l, Jon Burke, and Ed Murphy. The girls' team, captained by Liz Kissen and Liz Fraser maintained a respectable 3-6 record. The outstanding players were: Laura Power, Nancy Mills and Mimi Shaw. Jane Sheehan, an outstanding member of the SMSH swimming team placed second in both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle at the district finals. From there, she will proceed to the regional competition.

The awards were presented by Mayor Robert Knight at a ceremony held last Wednesday during announcements. The golf team won the Greater Miami Athletic Conference championship held last Thursday at the Country Club of Miami. Three members of the team, J. R. Wright, Mark Bradford, and John Pallot each shot a 77 to lead the team to a victory with a total score of 312. The team, coached by Dan Finora is hoping for a win in next week's district finals so they can advance to the state championship. Five members of the Gables swim team were named to the First Team of the Miami Herald's All-Dade Swim Team. They are Susie Yates (50 freestyle), Lori Ryder (500 freestyle), Ed Ryder (500 freestyle), and Tim Lacrey and Ed English (boys' relay team).
