Coral Gables city clerk gets first 50-year pin ever given

Loretta Sheehy joined the City of Coral Gables in 1926 when it had 1,000 residents and only 16 other employes. On Tuesday, April 27, the City Commission honored her 50th anniversary of city service. Miss Sheehy spent a quarter of an hour enjoying the honors and presents she received and then returned to commission chambers to continue taking minutes of the meeting. She was given a gold bowl and a golden clock as well as a parchment book signed by every city employe on pages stamped with each department's title in gold leaf. Wearing a corsage of pink rosebuds and the first 50-year service pin ever issued by the city, Miss Sheehy reminisced about the changes she has seen in Coral Gables. "We have had the finest people, the finest commissioners," she said, adding that most changes along the way have been good for the city. Laughing away her age in typical fashion, Miss Sheehy teased, "You know, I was only three years old when I came to work for the city." She said later that her 50th anniversary is being made more joyful by another 50th anniversary. Miss Sheehy is going to New Jersey early in May to celebrate her sister's Golden Jubilee as a nun.

Plan your own park

If you live off Riviera Drive behind South Dixie Highway in Coral Gables, there's a public hearing that might interest you at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 29, at the Cocoplum Women's Club. The Gables Commission will be there to hear residents' ideas on plans for developing the new city park in that neighborhood. The land has been purchased and is now coldly titled Parcel 206, but it will soon be a park and that park's activities will be affected by citizen opinion given Thursday night, City Manager Martin Gainer said Tuesday, April 27.
