Slow mail irks Alcazar residents

We only deliver them late if we get them late.” Kelly said customer complaints recently have been directed more toward long lines at the Post Office than toward problems with home delivery. “People really resent standing in line,” he reported. “We hear many of them say 'we're not cattle. This is Coral Gables. We don't have to stand in line.'” Kelly said an effort is being made to reduce lines by changing clerks to a later lunch hour schedule so there are more windows open for customer service during the noon rush. Complaint cards are available for customers at the post office and from individual letter carriers, Kelly said, adding that he tries to call people with complaints to solve any problems. “This is a difficult time for the postal service,” he said. “There have been so many changes. We are trying to improve but things are going so fast.” Kelly's office is a rather baren room off the main customer area of the post office. His desk is covered with paperwork and detailed columns of figures. “There is a lot of paperwork,” he said. “I used to have a secretary. They just reduced us by 14 people and I have two vacancies waiting for clerks on top of that. They are bidding on the posts throughout Miami.” Kelly added that the Gables post office's limited parking provokes a lot of complaints. “I don't really see a solution for that unless the city can do something,” he said.
