Water firm requests rate hike

Are you ready to spend another $5 each month for water and sewer services? General Waterworks, serving parts of Coral Gables and South Dade, filed Tuesday, April 27, for an increase in its rates. Utility Manager Larry Fresh said the request, if granted, would "increase the average water bill for residential customers by $2.50 a month and would increase sewer customers' bills by about the same amount." Fresh said the total increase, about $2.8 million, includes $1,473,000 in increased federal, state and local taxes. "The last rate increase granted was based on cost and expenses in 1972," he added, claiming the utility lost $800,000 last year. The utility manager said the losses would inevitably result in poor service to present customers and inability to serve new clients. "Since 1972, the company has paid the highest interest rates in its history to finance construction of new facilities," Fresh said. "No community can grow and prosper without reliable utilities."
