What's Happening

Legend made to seem real in 'Robin and Marian'

movie review ... erica meyer Pageantry exposed and legend made real are at the heart of a solidly good new film, Robin and Marian. When folklore last saw Robin Hood, he was riding off to follow Richard the Lion-Hearted into the Crusades. The new movie finds him returning to England 20 years later, a grizzled but vigorous man portrayed with skill and affection by Sean Connery. And, also 20 years later, he rejoins Maid Marian. She is played by Audrey Hepburn in a long delayed return to the screen. Be assured, she still has the best bone structure and the most luminous eyes in the business. Hepburn's Marian has the dignity of a nun (which the Maid had become) and the romantic heart of a young girl in the midst of a love affair, an affair Robin's return makes her remember. Their story covers little time but a full spectrum of emotion and adventure. Robin and Little John (Nicol Williamson) again fight the Sheriff of Nottingham (Robert Shaw) and again rest in Sherwood Forest with Friar Tuck (Ronnie Barker) and Will Scarlet (Denholm Elliot). Robin and Marian's plot covers escape, humor, love, legend, pageantry, royalty, killing and questioning. The story, which is not a particularly happy one this time around, moves cleanly through their reunion, their return to the forest, the Sheriff's reluctantly renewed enmity and the last big adventure. There is little swearing or sex in the movie, though Connery displays a glimpse of bare bottom jumping down from a tree and Robin and Marian cuddle a bit. It's the killing that might keep kids away and the final bit of melodrama and gore. Nevertheless, it's all handled well and the conclusion, though a saddening surprise, is understandable and believable. The acting is superb — from the leads right down to the bit players there is not a single false step. Connery, wasted in years of James Bonding, repeats the maturity and cheerful cynicism of The Man Who Would King. Hepburn is just plain magnificent. Williamson, a Shakespearean actor usually, was made to be Little John and Shaw is an oddly touching Sheriff, not as villainous as one might expect but very effective.

Dining out La creme de la crepe inside Dadeland mall

La Crepe Restaurant, Dadeland Shopping Center. Hours: 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday. No credit cards yet, arrangements pending; no wine or beer yet, license pending. Ample parking. Imagine a French sidewalk cafe, the candy-stripe awning, the hanging plants, the red tile floor, the delicate crepes, the waitresses in colorful, regional costume. It's all at La Crepe Restaurant in Dadeland Shopping Center, coupled with good food at reasonable prices. From soup to salad to crepes to dessert, the menu follows the traditional style of French Brittany. The soups are hearty concoctions served in pottery crocks: caution: a bowl of soup is almost a full meal. If you don't feel like crepes — a shame, the selection is very tempting — lunch and supper offerings include two kinds of quiche and a variety of salads. The crepes come two ways — made with light wheat flour or with heartier buckwheat. The buckwheat is unusual and the fillings add another taste to the varied crepe. Desserts include another set of crepes — flambe with Grand Marnier of Kirshwasser and strawberries, crispy with chocolate sauce or hot brandied apricot or stuffed with hot apples and ice cream, for $1.55 to $2.95. The service is friendly and efficient. ERICA MEYER
