Cougar trackmen on trophy trail

The Cougar trackmen took another step toward the elusive state championship trophy this week. Friday night April 23, at Community College Stadium, Killian took the District 8AAAA men's championship for the second consecutive year. The Cougars' 63 and a-third points was enough to take rival Northwestern by a sizable margin. The runners-up had 51 points followed by Jackson (49 1/2) and Palmetto (30 1/3). Northwestern's Marshall Blount and Killian's Gary Wilborn staged the race of the meet. The dead-heat finish in the 880 was clocked at 1:53.3, best in the county this season. The running Cougars now have the regional meet on May 8 and, if successful in the regionals, the state meet, May 14-15. In other sports, the girls' swimming team will lay their undefeated season on the line when they travel to Fort Lauderdale for the regionals on May 1.

Student officers named

Student Council officers for the 1976-77 school year were elected on April 23. The new officers are Jay Sandusky, president; Jose Garmendia, vice-president; Marlene Jiminez, secretary and Arlene Jacobs, treasurer. The candidates campaigned throughout the week of April 19 which was climaxed by the actual elections themselves. Students had to present their Coral Park Identification cards in order to vote in the regulation voting machines. The new officers will be inducted by this year's president Steven Clar at the annual Student Council banquet. The First Annual Faculty Follies took place on April 24 and it was a huge success. This was a variety show put on by teachers and administration to raise money to air condition the school gymnasium. Much credit goes to Ted Hennig who was the show director, and all the teachers who gave their time and effort so that student athletes could practice and play in more comfort. Cheerleading tryouts were held April 26 for all sophomore, and junior boys and girls wishing to be on the 1976-77 Varsity Cheerleading Squad. The students were judged by cheerleading sponsor Ms. Ofelia Hirigoyen and this years' captain Sandy Hudgins. The Silver Knight Awards ceremony will be held April 29 at Gusman Hall. Silver Knight winners in the 14 categories will be announced at this time.

Killian High

Bill Kaczaraba The gymnastics and baseball teams are winding up their seasons soon with their respective playoffs scheduled for May. In school news and activities, last Saturday's Cystic Fibrosis Bike-a-Thon has earned an estimated $700 for the cause. Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. Chariman Liz Nord considers last week's initial event "a success." Ahead at Killian is another Coffee House in the Little Theater on Friday night. The performing arts department plans to put on another musical spectacular. Information is available at the activities office. Also, 14 Killian students will join hundreds of others from around the county for the Silver Knight awards ceremony slated for Thursday night April 29, at the Gusman Cultural Center. The public is invited. Donation is $1.
