City backs policemen in $2.016 million suit

Confronting a $2.016 million lawsuit with only $100,000 in liability insurance, the City Commission decided that Coral Gables will fight what a resolution has called "frivolous law suits." At their Tuesday, April 27 meeting, commissioners ruled they will have their insurance company derena against the damage suit filed by the family of a police informant killed in a police stakeout of a bank robbery in March, 1975. Police Chief William Kimbrough thanked commissioners for their support of Gables police. Commissioners ruled that the city will hire special counsel only if the insurance company seems to be doing an inadequate job on the case. City attorneys Charles Spooner and Robert Zahner will not defend the suit because it is likely both will be asked to testify. In other action Tuesday, the Commission: ● Voted to install a new telephone system in city hall at a cost of $33,643 — a one-time payment that will save $7,000 in interest. ● Deferred action on the second reading of a new department store sub-leasing ordinance to do further research on the nature of concessions within a store and space that will be required for them. ● Passed on second reading an amendment to the alcoholic beverage code to conform with state law. ● Appointed Mrs. Fern Clayton to the Beautification Committee and Mrs. Tracy McCrary to the Citizens Advisory Committee for Community Improvement. ● Sent a resolution to the Dade County Commission protesting the proliferation of county signs in the Gables. ● Accepted bids for a 15-passenger van and a 1976 pickup truck. ● Approved, in concept, Edmund P. Russo's plans for a parking lot along the railroad right-of-way on Ponce de Leon in the 4600 block. ● Passed resolutions naming May as Older Americans Month, the week of May 3 as Thumbs Up Florida Week, the week of May 3 as National Music Week and the week of May 9 as Historic Preservation Week.
